This Week at CBU


  • Tau Kappa Epsilon is hosting Teke Week 2017 this week with event to raise money and awareness for St. Jude — including a Car Smash, Tau-Kappa-Chino, and more.
  • The Honors Program will present "The Secret Life of Dr. Stan Eisen" on Monday at 6:00 p.m. in Spain Auditorium to satisfy your curiosity and find out what CBU professors do when they’re not at work. 
  • As part of the Black History Month, Student Life will host a  viewing of the movie Loving on on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in Spain Auditorium. 
  • The National Society of Black Engineers will be having a Donut Sale on Thursday from 8:00 until 11:00 a.m. by the Cooper-Wilson Center. 
  • Sigma Tau Delta presents a Life After CBU Roundtable on "You're Getting an English Degree?" on Thursday in Buckman Hall 104 at 6:00 p.m.

In Memoriam


James McWillie, AFSC passed away on February 11 at the age of 101. Over his very full life, Mr. McWillie was a decorated veteran of World War II, a business executive, the first financial director of the Catholid Diocese of Memphis, a civic leader, and volunteer extraordinaire — including 25 years as a volunteer at the CBU Archives following his retirement. His many awards included a Papal Knighthood (by His Holiness Pope Paul VI), the Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice Medal (by His Holiness Pope John Paul II), the Bishop Carroll T. Dozier Service Award (Associated Catholic Charities), the Martyrs of Memphis Award (Diocese of Memphis), Award of Merit for Civic and Community Service (City fo Memphis), the George F. Hixon Award (Kiwanis Club), and the Ladle Award (Memphis Food Bank). Mr. McWillie was elected to the Christian Brothers High School Hall of Fame in 1979. He became an Affiliated Member of the Christian Brothers in 1993. At CBU, he was awarded the Brother Lawrence Egbert Service Award in 1998 and the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2005. 

Mr. McWillie leaves his two daughters, Judith McWillie of Athens, GA and Betty McWillie (Career Services, Retired) of Memphis. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 14 at Canale Funeral Directors (2700 Union Avenue Extended) at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary to follow at 6:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Louis Catholic Church (203 S. White Station Rd.) on Wednesday, February 15 at 9:30 a.m., with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Clunan Center  at St. Louis Catholic Church at 11:30 a.m.

Kelly Summons Crow (Accounting & Finance '09) was the subject of a profile article in the February 4 edition of The Daily News entitled "With a Mind for Math, Crow Finds Fit As CPA at Reynolds, Bone & Griesbeck."
Daniel Gabriel (Natural Science ’16) has been accepted to the Experimental Psychology Ph.D. program at the University of Memphis. 
South Region members of the College Sports Information Directors of America voted Buccaneer guard Jeff Larkin (Business Administration '18) to the Academic All-District Five team. Larkin carries a 3.84 GPA and averages 16.7 points. 3.6 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game for the Bucs.
South Region members of the College Sports Information Directors of America voted Lady Buc forward Samantha Reeves (Visual Arts '17) to the Academic All-District Five team. Reeves carries a 3.42 GPA and leads the Lady Bucs with 17.8 points and 7.1 rebounds to go with 2.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.7 blocks per game. She ranks third in the GSC and 49th in the nation in scoring, and her 19.9 points per game in GSC play ranks second in the league.
Dr. Jennifer Weske (Accounting) was pictured and quoted in a February 4 article in The Daily News entitled "College Accounting Programs Add Specialties as Profession Evolves." The article focused on CBU's forensic accounting program.

If you missed the deadline for the London-Dublin trip this time around, Fr. Paul Watkins will be offering another trip for the School of Business during Fall Break 2018.

Prof. Steve Rivera in the CAPS program is offering a trip to Barcelona, Spain during fall break 2017. This trip is now open to day students as well! Students will have the opportunity to take a psychology course focusing on Spanish culture.

Picture This: Education Photo Contest


The Department of Education is excited about its recent move to the new Rosa Deal School of Arts building… but their walls are bare! They’re asking alumni and current Education students to help fill them by entering photos into the 2017 “Picture This” photo contest. This contest is only open to current students or alums who are currently teaching or have taught in a school — suitable photos are of students and teachers laughing, learning, thinking, playing, or anything that depicts the day-to-day life of the school and its students. Winning entries will be printed and displayed in the hall of the third floor of the Rosa Deal School of Arts building. Please email GraduateEducation@cbu.edu for an entry form. Entry deadline is March 15.

Buc Bulletin


MEN'S BASKETBALL (14-9, 11-6 GSC): Host West Florida used a 14-0 first-half run to take the lead on their way to a 73-68 win over the Bucs Thursday night. Valdosta State outscored the Bucs 33-14 in the first 16 minutes as they rolled to a 79-65 win Saturday afternoon. Their next home game is Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. as they host Mississippi College. On Saturday, they travel to Cleveland, MS to face Delta State.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (12-10, 9-9 GSC): First-place West Florida out-scored the Lady Bucs 13-2 over the final 5:44 as they rallied for a 54-45 win Thursday night. Valdosta State used two 10-0 second-half runs to pull away from the Lady Bucs as they won 80-70 Saturday afternoon.Their next home game is Thursday night at 5:00 p.m. as they host Mississippi College. On Saturday, they travel to Cleveland, MS to face Delta State.
BASEBALL (4-5): The Bucs rallied to tie the game in the seventh, eighth and 10th innings before dropping an 8-6 decision to Missouri Southern State in 12 innings Tuesday afternoon at USA Stadium. On Wednesday, Missouri Southern State claimed a 9-4 win over the Bucs. The Bucs claimed an 11-4 win over Columbia Saturday in game one, but the visiting Cougars took a 6-3 win in the second game to split the doubleheader. On Sunday, the Bucs used an eighth-inning rally to force extra innings and a 10th-inning rally to to beat Columbia 7-6 in 12 innings. The Bucs return to action Saturday at noon as they open GSC play with a doubleheader against Valdosta State, followed by a single game against VSU on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
SOFTBALL 
(2-5): The Lady Bucs were swept in the AUM Tournament this past weekend, losing to Spring Hill and Auburn-Montgomery both days. Their home opener is set for Saturday and Sunday, when they host No. 13 Valdosta State at 1:00 p.m. on both days.
TENNIS: The Bucs defeated Tuskegee but lost to Point and Georgia Southwestern as they opened the spring schedule. The Lady Bucs swept Point 9-0 on the road but dropped neutral site matches to Montevallo and Georgia Southwestern in their first weekend of the spring schedule. Both teams return to action with four matches next weekend. against Texas A&M-Texarkana, Ozarks, Spring Hill, and Rhodes.
