15 February 2017

But you all greetings.

Three weeks into the year and our children are certainly working towards our values 'To be G.R.E.A.T'. All classes are having a focus on this over the term and really teasing out what 'To be GREAT' means.  Over the weeks we will be focusing on a new value.  Please take the time to ask your children about their understanding of the value that has be looked closely at so far - G - Good Friends.  Ask them what a good friend does, what does a good friend say?  What would a good friend do for you?  You might just be interested in the answers!

Cricket: Our boys cricket team certainly are 'GREAT' after winning their first round game against St Joseph's yesterday.  Aiming High and Teamwork certainly contributed to this win!  St Joseph's got 135 in their 20 overs and our team made 136 with 3 overs and 7 wickets in hand. A comfortable win!

Standout performances came from Tama Chapman (45 runs), Hunta Gledhill (19 not out) and Ben Kay (17 not out), with Will Read and Ben Kay each bowling their 2 overs for only 7 runs.  Their next game is in Oamaru against Oamaru Intermediate on Monday February 27th. A note will come home early next week in regards to the organisation of this.

I'm looking forward to joining our Girls' Cricket team in Oamaru tomorrow as they play Weston in the NZ Post Trophy game.  Watch our FB page for updates!

Touch: Well done to our touch teams who had a GREAT start to their season last night.  All teams performed admirably on the field and even our new little Year 4 team - who have never played before, gave a much more experienced team a good run for their money.  Our teams were well turned out and represented us well.

New Sign In/Out System: Please note that we have a new sign in/sign out system at school.  This is a digital system and requires you to make note of any time you visit, or if your child is late, or being picked up early. We ask that ALL parents who enter our school sign in and out please.  This is in line with updated Health and Safety laws and practices.

Updated Digital Tools and Publication Agreement: This agreement has been updated to include the publication of children's work and photos in ALL media (previously just Facebook), and is coming home today.  Please return these to school promptly.

The calendar seems very full at the moment.  Next week we are welcoming back a school from Timaru who visited us last year to view our school in action.  They are a large school and are bringing different teachers than those who visited previously.  It is wonderful for us to know that our little school is setting the standard for others.

And good luck to our girls cricket team who are playing against Weston tomorrow.

Have a great week

There has been a couple of items handed into the School Office that have been left behind at the Swimming Pool. Please see Michelle in the office if you are missing something!

The Year 8 students met with the Public Health Nurses today to learn about the HPV virus and vaccination. They have all been given a form that needs to be filled in with an approval and returned to the school office by Friday 17th February.
ALL slips must be returned outlining whether you consent or do not consent to your child receiving this vaccination.
Lindsay Oakes - Public Health Nurse has his details on the form if you require further information.
We look forward to seeing you at the Meet the Teacher evening tonight.
Tuakana Hub (Yrs 5-8) 6.30pm
Teina Hub (Yrs 1-4) 7.00pm

These meetings will outline the programmes and expectations for the year in each hub.
(Please note that there isn't any supervision available for children.)
TORO PIKOPIKO PUPPET SHOW - Maori Rock Art
Last week we were privileged to host Duntroon, Five Forks and Omarama Schools for a Puppet Show based on the Maori Rock Art. The show was written around Rock Art in the South Canterbury and North Otago area.   The Te Ana Ngai Rock Art Centre in Timaru worked in collaboration with the North Island puppet troop last year and they toured many local sites for inspiration.
Due to our proximity to the Rock Art this professional show came at no cost to us.  It was also neat to be able to host the local schools who visited.
As you can see from the photos below, it was a very interactive show - even including the teachers!  Thank you to the Te Ana Ngai Rock Art Centre in Timaru for bringing this to us.
TOUCH ORGANISATION
With nearly 40 children playing touch - I want to be really clear on the organisation of the transport.  I am aiming for communicating via email on a Monday as to the travel arrangements.  This email will only go out to the caregivers of touch players and will have who is driving, who is travelling in each vehicle and the contact details of the driver.  This way you know who is taking your child and the driver's contact number.  Drivers all have the contact numbers of the children who they are carrying so that they can make contact with you to organise drop off, or collection times along the way or at school.  And I will sleep more comfortably knowing that everyone is clear on what is going on!
