Belief: An Indispensable Spice of Life

A teen in Blue Dragon’s program shares his story in his own words:

“I have been at Blue Dragon for 4 years. I am a student. Today, I bring you an indispensable spice of life, and it’s “Belief”.

Belief is an important value to me but is something hard to explain. To me, it means we trust ourselves, trust in others or believe in a better future. Without belief, we will be unable to reach our dreams.

In the past I lost all belief in my life.

I was born in a poor family. There are 6 people in my family: my parents, my 3 siblings and I. My dad had brain disease, and I have an impairment in my leg. Neighbors thought we did bad things in a past life as we were poor and suffered with these disabilities. Things did not stop there. They blamed us every time they lost something. So I lost faith in them.

I was also bullied many times by other kids, but no one protected me, even though I did not do anything wrong. This gave me the strong idea in my mind that “violence can change everything”. I started to fight with people, which made my parents upset. My friends and people in my community started staying away from me.

Due to discrimination from my friends and my family’s situation, I left my home to earn money at the age of 13. I did a lot of different work like shoeshining and working in food stalls. But I never got paid after all my hard work. With the shoeshining job, people competed and used violence to get customers. I quit working and continued wandering around. I totally lost belief in my future.

After wandering and living on the streets for a while, I met a Blue Dragon staff. I did not trust what they were doing at the beginning. But the patience, love, and respect from them have changed me. I went back to school and integrated with new friends there. I found love and respect from my family and neighbors. Blue Dragon helped me to change my point of view about life. Life is still beautiful.

Through my story, I want you to tell you that we can do everything if we have belief.”

What’s new at Blue?
Tet Awards 2017
Tet Awards is one of the most anticipated events of the year at Blue Dragon. The theme chosen for this Lunar New Year concert was 'Hotpot of Life'. The children had reflected on what 'ingredients' they needed for a balanced life, and they danced, sang and acted to celebrate these values.
A new home
Getting into the simple routine of having meals together and sharing housekeeping duties is one of the ways the girls in a new shelter are being taught life-skills. It's a pilot project for girls at risk. With the support of social workers, these girls are learning that they can make a house a happy home.
Back to School!
Six children who we rescued from sweatshops in southern Vietnam have returned to school! They were identified as having been trafficked following the implementation of an early warning system developed by Blue Dragon. The plan is to share this system with teachers of other schools in central Vietnam.
Suicide Prevention in northern Vietnam
The ready availability of a poisonous plant and the lack of life skills amongst youth in Dien Bien, northern Vietnam, has led to a disturbing number of suicides. Blue Dragon held awareness raising events in schools to show the impact that suicide has on friends and family, and to teach problem solving skills. The students used drama effecitvely to convey the message.
A huge thank you to our community of supporters around the world!
Ethical fashion
Kelly Wren's Ousia project created a platform to promote ethically made fashion. Part proceeds were donated to Blue Dragon for rescues of children from slave labour. Kelly is passionate about ending child labour in the fashion industry.
12.5 days of cycling for a good cause
Nicholas Cooke cycled from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi to raise funds for Blue Dragon. He completed the challenging ride in 12.5 days! Nicholas is now looking at other ways to fundraise for Blue Dragon.
From China to Vietnam and all the way to Thailand!
Angela & Joop are cycling thousands of kilometres from China to Vietnam before carrying on to Laos and Thailand to fundraise for Blue Dragon. They stopped over in both Hanoi and Hue, central Vietnam, to say hello to the kids!
Sharing their happiness
Clare and Hendra decided to share the happiness of their wedding by encouraging their friends and families to donate to two charities, including Blue Dragon! The weather was perfect, and everyone had a marvellous time on their special day!
Floral Punk's Fashionable Heels
The survivors of trafficking to China received a wonderful gift from Floral Punk - 50 pairs of shoes! The fashion company has been a great supporter of the anti-trafficking program, giving not only these brand new shoes from their latest collection, but also making cash donations.
