   James Henricks on ‘Luther's 95 Theses 500 Years Later’
   Cultural, Racial Diversity, Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran

   James Henricks will be the keynote speaker at the 74th South Carolina Lutheran Men in Mission Convention on Saturday, Feb 18, Shepherd of the Sea (SOS) Lutheran Church, Garden City, SC.  He received his Masters of Divinity Degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in 2015 and is currently a candidate for a Masters of Theology from the University of Helsinki.  He is a native of Clemmons, NC.
   Hendricks will be available to accept a parish call after he receives the University of Helsinki degree. He comes to us highly recommended by Dr. Tony Everett.  Hendricks is scheduled to be married on July 1. Registration for the convention starts at 12 noon in the Narthex of Shepherd of the Sea with the event and meeting called to order at 1 p.m. by  SCLMM President Frank Bouknight.  
    A mid-afternoon Diversity Workshop is planned with Pastor Rick Carter, Director Evangelical Mission, introducing the two speakers, including Pastor Leroy Cannon of Pleasant Spring at Christ Mission, Columbia, SC, who spoke at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church on Sunday, Sept 18.  He returns Saturday to join the other Workshop speaker, Pastor Alejandro Mejia of Nuestro Salvador, Greenville.
   Rev. Cannon has a Bachelor of Arts from Benedict College, a Masters of Education degree from South Carolina State University and his Masters of Divinity from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary with additional studies at the University of South Carolina and South Carolina State University.  
   He has served as a Methodist pastor for 34 years; an administrative educator, teacher and counselor in Richland County School District for 35 years and at the Challenger Learning Center as Space Commander for 10 years. He is married to Helen Gilliam, has two children, Dr. Shawna C. Lemon, Esq., and Gilliam L. Cannon.

   Pastor Alejandro Mejia was born in Colombia, South America and is a fourth generation Lutheran.  Pastor Alejandro serves as the ELCA mission developer of Iglesia Nuestro Salvador in Greenville, SC, the first Hispanic Lutheran congregation in the Upstate.  Besides his Theological studies from the Lutheran School of Theology in his home country, he obtained degrees in administration and music.   He is completing his candidacy process in order to become an ordained pastor of the ELCA with the support of the SC Synod, receiving training from Pacific Theological Lutheran Seminary, and other important Latino professors of theology from the ELCA.
   He has served in different positions at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Colombia locally and nationally, and as church representative in worldwide gatherings related to the Lutheran World Federation.  He was part of the Churchwide Council, being the first youth elected in that position in the history of the Lutheran church in Colombia.  In his spare time, Pr. Alejandro sings at the Greenville Chorale, enjoys doing hot yoga and spending time with his four-month old puppy, Tomas. 

   Other speakers include SC-Synod Bishop Rev. Herman R. Yoos, National LMM President Rich White, National LMM VP Tim Crout, NCLMM President Steven Hoyle, SCWELCA VP Jennifer Nuovo, Lutheran Services Carolinas Representative Kirsten Kitchen and LTSS Pastor Paul Summer.  
   Following the convention is a worship and communion service led by Pastor Brad Bellah with Pastor Leroy Cannon presenting the sermon.   A banquet begins at 6:30 p.m. in the SOS Fellowship Hall.  Each BBQ dinner costs $25 with checks payable to SOS LMM.  Checks are to be mailed to Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, 2637 S.    Lutheran Men in Mission serve as disciples of men having a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ and providing financial support of the Lutheran mission churches in South Carolina along with the Master Builders Bible Program, One Year to Live Retreats, Building Men Through Christ Seminars and Men In Action young men events.  

   The Conference will give recognition to SCLMM members and churches, and hear reports on many SCLMM activities, including Committee of 100, which was established in 1976, to encourage 100 men to give $100 each year to the Loan Fund.  For information, contact Kevin Wicker, 977 Quail Drive, Walterboro, SC 29488, kwicker@lowcountry.com
 
  On Friday, Feb. 17, is the Past President’s Banquet at 6:30 p.m. in the Wahoo’s Seafood House, Murrells Inlet MarshWalk, with a choice of seafood or non seafood.  Each attendee will be given a check with payment to be made to the restaurant. This dinner is open to anyone who wishes to attend. "The intent is to honor our past presidents, not to create an exclusive club,” says John Boozer, SCLMM vice president.

Pastor Leroy Cannon of Pleasant Spring at Christ Mission, Columbia, SC, speaks at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church on Sunday, Sept 18.  He returns Saturday, Feb. 18, to join Pastor Alejandro Mejia of Nuestro Salvador, Greenville, to speak during a mid-afternoon Diversity Workshop introduced by Pastor Rick Carter, Director Evangelical Mission.  Members of the SOS Youth group, led by Jennifer Hirsh, visited Pastor Cannon’s church a short time before a Christ Mission delegation came to the beach.
