Functional Medicine is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century.
By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms.
Functional Medicine practitioners spend more time with their patients listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease.
In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.
WHY IBS?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common conditions seen in primary care and is said to have no cure by conventional medicine standards.
The conventional medical approach to treating GI dysfunction, and really any type of dysfunction, is to make a diagnosis and then provide treatment designed to suppress symptoms. While this approach can provide some needed relief, it often fails to identify or address the underlying problem and the ultimate physiological reason for suffering.
In Functional Medicine, we recognize that IBS has myriad possible causes as is the case for many common conditions. Finding the underlying cause of dysfunction is critical to return to wellness, as opposed to just suppressing symptoms.
