MEDIA ADVISORY: Borderland Immigration Council Releases Discretion to Deny,
Report Identifying the Impacts of Immigration Enforcement on Border Communities
What: The Borderland Immigration Council will hold a press conference to announce the release of Discretion to Deny, a report identifying the failures of immigration agencies and officials in the El Paso Sector to respect the rights and dignity of migrants and asylum seekers. This in-depth report is based on documentation of over 100 cases of abuse of discretion, prolonged detention, family separation, and deterrence of asylum-seekers in El Paso.

The report will be presented to the public at Discretion to Deny: The Impacts of Immigration Enforcement on Border Communities, a forum to be held on Wednesday, February 15 at 5:30pm at the El Paso Natural Gas Conference Center. A panel discussion will include Dr. Josiah Heyman of the UTEP Center for InterAmerican and Border Studies; Shaw Drake, Equal Justice Works Fellow, Refugee Protection with Human Rights First; Joanna Williams, Director of Education and Advocacy for the Kino Border Initiative; Theodora Simon, Associate Director, Hope Border Institute; and Linda Rivas, Executive Director, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center.
