 RYU AND WESSON POLL
MIRACLE MILE RESIDENTS

ON HPOZ

Respond Today!

Councilmember David Ryu has mailed a letter to the residents of the Council District 4 portion of the Miracle Mile. Included in the letter is a FAQ on the Miracle HPOZ and a map of the HPOZ showing the areas that were excluded by the CPC last December [see below].

Areas in red were excluded from the HPOZ by the City Planning Commission.
Click on map to enlarge.

Ryu’s letter requests that residents of Council District 4 respond by February 20 to:

Julia Duncan, Senior Planning Deputy
julia.duncan@lacity.org
or call 213-473-2346

On Feb. 8, 2017, Councilmember Herb Wesson, distributed his own letter to the Council District 10 portion of our HPOZ. In his letter Wesson requests feedback on the HPOZ by Feb. 17 to:

Jordan Beroukhim, Planning Deputy
jordan.beroukhim@lacity.org
or call 213-473-7010

It is important that HPOZ residents of both council districts respond to these letters today.  Please email or call in your support for HPOZ “as approved by the Cultural Heritage Commission” (which includes the historic multifamily buildings and 500 rent stabilized units put on the chopping block by CPC).

Also, click the "YES" button above to reinforce your message in favor of HPOZ to Ryu, Wesson, and the City Council's Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee. Thanks...

WE'RE ALMOST OVER THE
FINISH LINE

A message from James O’Sullivan, MMRA President

Three years ago we set out to save our historic Miracle Mile. That’s what an Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) is about first and foremost: preserving history. The Miracle Mile HPOZ will preserve the historic architecture of our homes and multifamily buildings while protecting the charm and scale and livability of our lovely community.

Thanks to the support of Councilmember Ryu and former Councilmember Tom LaBonge – and hundreds of residents who contributed tens-of-thousands of dollars and many hours of time and hard work – we are almost over the finish line. We have a Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee hearing to go, then our HPOZ will be brought to the full City Council for a vote, and, once the mayor signs off, our historic neighborhood will have the protection it so richly needs and deserves.

Unfortunately, the City Planning Commission (CPC) turned our HPOZ into a game of winners and losers in December when it excluded the historic properties north of 8th Street, along Olympic Boulevard, and on the west side of Orange Grove Avenue, south of 8th Street.

These areas were excluded for one reason, and one reason only: to demolish multifamily buildings – destroying 500 rent stabilized units in the process – which speculators want to turn into huge luxury apartment projects.

We must fight to reinstate these orphaned areas. These residents are as deserving of the benefits of HPOZ as the rest of us. Historic resources cannot be sacrificed for the sake of high-density development, especially when there is ample space for such projects in the Miracle Mile.  That’s why the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission, in approving our HPOZ, refused to exclude these vital historic blocks.

We are all tired, it’s been a long haul. This is 25th mile of a 26-mile marathon – and a vocal minority of HPOZ opponents are tossing thumbtacks on the track. We can’t let them distract us from our goal. This is why we must push through and flood City Hall with letters, emails, phone calls, and petitions. And this is why you must make a real effort to attend town hall meetings and public hearings. You can start by pushing the "YES" button:
It’s not often that personal participation makes measurable difference in this town. This is one of those times. It’s now or never for the Miracle Mile.  Say Yes to HPOZ!  Save our Historic Neighborhood!

(By the way, all the photos in this bulletin are of historic properties excluded from our HPOZ by the City Planning Commission. Thanks to John Bertram for documenting what we stand to lose...)

PLUM MEETING ON FEB. 14 CANCELLED
We Will Notify You When it is Rescheduled

A hearing on the Miracle Mile HPOZ at the City Council’s Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee scheduled for Feb. 14th was cancelled by Councilmember Wesson so that he could conduct a poll of residents in the Council District 10 portion of our HPOZ. The hearing has yet to be rescheduled. We will notify you as soon as this hearing is scheduled. Again, we must marshal a large turnout. It is a numbers game. We will be providing transportation to City Hall and free parking in the Miracle Mile for those who will be traveling with us.

Click on the "YES" button to let the members of the PLUM Committee know that you support HPOZ:
