Netra spent the first four years of her life without a legal identity. She had never had a birth certificate, accessed social services, been immunised or received any education. Essentially, she did not exist. Her mother's employment had been unlawfully terminated when her pregnancy was discovered and she had become unable to leave Hong Kong.

After finding PathFinders, our social worker helped Netra’s mother to submit a paternity claim and to register her father, a Hong Kong Permanent Resident, on Netra's birth certificate. After a 9-month process, Netra was able to access the healthcare and education she had always been entitled to.

Thanks to PathFinders' intervention and support, Netra now has both a legal and national identity, is healthy and is attending school. And, wonderfully, for the first time, Netra has made some friends.

This outcome for Netra and hundreds of children like her would not be possible without your ongoing support - thank you!

Save the Children & PathFinders
Save the Children Hong Kong fights for children's rights. PathFinders ensures that the most vulnerable children born in Hong Kong, and their migrant mothers, are respected and protected. With our missions firmly aligned, we are excited to announce our partnership.

With Save the Children's support, we can do even more to transform the lives of the most vulnerable children born in Hong Kong by:
  • providing life-changing health interventions to babies and mothers who cannot access or afford health care;
  • conducting pre-natal check-ups, child immunisations and follow-up checks;
  • educating mothers about baby care and breastfeeding to ensure safer pregnancies and, thereby, healthier children and mothers.

Interns making Impact
Intern Vivian Yeung is a law student at Hong Kong University and part of a team of legal interns who designed and delivered "street law" classes for migrant mothers. "I’ve always felt a deep appreciation for the migrant workers who leave their own countries behind to help us out here in HK and without whom the city would not be anywhere near as vibrant as it is today. Yet there is not nearly enough support for these workers when they are at their most vulnerable."
