January brought sad news that Peter Gifford had died. Peter’s father William put the Gifford name in the ‘Gifford-McMahon Cycle,’ and founded Cryomech. Peter joined the company in 1973, becoming President in 1978. Well known and greatly liked around the world, Peter will be much missed.

Cryogenics a Force for Good
On the one hand General Atomics use Cryogenics to dispose of munitions. And on the other Toby Peters and the University of Birmingham are helping put the World to rights, by 2030, with Clean Cold initiatives, to fix the Food Cold Chain in India, and help achieve the United Nations’ Global Goals.
Toby has added Visiting Professor at Heriot Watt to his business card, and posts on LinkedIn about Clean Cold being at the heart of UN Global Goals, leading to a new report : ‘Clean Cold & the Global Goals.’ from the Birmingham Energy Institute.

Kash Samra from Blackhall Engineering pointed us at this book : The Outsiders Rebooting our World – with a chapter on the Dearman Engine ! Kash says Blackhall are delighted their 108 inch gate valve passed its factory acceptance pressure test drop-tight by the way !
Cryogenics in Space
India has successfully tested the improved upper stage of its GSLV rocket, says ‘The Hindu.’ The C-25 cryogenic upper stage performed a 50-second static fire test and performed as expected.
Cryogenics in Electric Power
A slightly odd article in the nextBIGFuture on fusion power touches on superconducting wire from Oxford Superconducting Technology, concluding ‘tokamak fusion looks like a long winding path to energy that is not lower cost or vastly cleaner.’ Niobium tin superconducting wire production was ramped up for ITER, resulting in production of 88km of conductor weighing 825 tonnes.

The IoR recently held a Medal-Winner's Talk on the Sure Chill refrigeration system. And here is the brilliant Campden BRI on extension of [food] product shelf-life through super chilling.
MarketsandMarkets meanwhile project a $10 bn pa Cold Storage Construction Market.
Hydrogen & Helium
Australia and Japan sign agreement for bulk shipment of liquid hydrogen. And NASA published this piece on Ultra-Cold Storage for Liquid Hydrogen as the Fuel of the Future The theme of Gasworld's January monthly review [available to subscribers] is on Helium, from Helium One to MRI & Recovery.
News in LNG
In BP’s Energy Outlook, projecting to 2035, LNG grows twice as fast as international gas, seven times faster than pipeline gas, to account for around half all globally traded gas – up from 32% now.
 FT Reports say a fleet 34 FSRUs (Floating & Storage Regasification Units) costing $300m a pop will be key to opening new LNG markets (avoiding the need for investment in fixed import terminals). They mention 3% boil-off a month in storage mode. Ophir Energy is progressing the Fortuna FLNG Project in Equatorial New Guinea.
Daewoo meanwhile delivered the first of 15 ‘Arc 7’ ice-class LNG carriers for the Russian Yamal project. They come at $300m each too, but can sail to Japan or China in 14-16 days in summer, ploughing through ice 1.5m thick.
UK LNG technology specialist Gasconsult has struck a deal with Osomo in the Netherlands. ExxonMobil has licensed its CMIST dehydration technology for LNG to Sulzer’s Chemtech Division.

This piece on Siemens MRI in gasworld covers past present and future – Siemens has shipped 20,000 superconducting magnets from their plant near Oxford since it opened in 1983. DotMED says GE has a washing machine sized MRI scanner for babies, one on trial in Sheffield.
NIST has cooled a vibrating aluminium membrane below one fifth of a single quantum ! Cryogenics on a Chip ? Physics World ran this piece involving Bose-Einstein-Condensates on a chip.

Cryo Biz
Was BCryo’s Scandinavian Reporter asleep at the switch for over a year ? MAN Diesel (part of MAN and VW), bought the marine fuel gas business of Swedish Cryo AB from Linde, giving rise to MAN Cryo.
Founded in 1999 by Dr Robin Cantor, STAR Cryoelectronics supplies SQUID sensors and readout electronics, cryogenic systems & foundry services for superconducting thin-film device fabrication.
Events & Education
 CSA has broadcast availability of the Proceedings for ICC19 which took place in San Diego last June.
There’s a CERN HiLumi Industry Day at Daresbury Lab on May 22-23.
As if September wasn’t Cryogenic enough already, after MT-25 (August 27-September 1) this year’s Cryousers Conference is at Coventry University from September 4-6.
Then it’s European Cryogenics Days and Workshop on HTS Cooling at Karlsruhe (September 13-15), Cluster Day (September 20 at Daresbury Lab) and EUCAS in Geneva (September 17-21).
