Pharmacy Access Scheme - Only 2 Weeks Left to Apply

If you think your pharmacy should be part of the Pharmacy Access Scheme, then you only have two weeks left to apply for a review. The review process closes at the end of February. See the full details here. http://psnc.org.uk/our-news/pharmacy-access-scheme-review-process-to-close-soon/

New rules on use of NHS logo

There are new rules for how pharmacies and other primary care practitioners should use the NHS logo, e.g. on pharmacy signage, websites and information material. This PSNC briefing explains more: http://psnc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/PSNC-Briefing-010.17-Updated-NHS-Identity-Guidelines-–-NHS-logo-use-by-pharmacies.pdf

IMPORTANT: Register for SCR by 28th Feb or miss out on £200

If you’re not already registered for and using the Summary Care Record (SCR), you need to submit your smartcard registration (following this Next Steps guide) by 28th February at the latest to benefit from the £200 payment.
If you submit your registration after that date, then the Registration Authority cannot guarantee it will be processed in time for you to qualify for the £200 payment for pharmacies that start using SCR before 31st March 2017.
Smartcard registration usually takes two weeks to process. Once smartcards for your pharmacy have been updated you will receive confirmation of this. You will then need to access SCR before the deadline of 31st March 2017 to trigger the live status for your pharmacy. This Next Steps guide explains what you need to do.

Update on the All-Party Parliamentary Group schedule

Parliamentary pharmacy group’s inquiry

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Pharmacy, which works with Pharmacy Voice and other sponsors, has published the areas and evidence it plans to consider in its inquiry into the future of community pharmacy and the impact of funding cuts. The provisional details (courtesy of Pharmacy Voice) are:

The provisional dates are as follows:

  • The Murray Review and the development of services in community pharmacies - 21/02/17 @ 2pm.
  •  Minor Ailments Service - 27/2/17 @ 3pm.
  • Access to community pharmacies and digital pharmacy - 13/03/2017 @ 3pm.
  • Pharmacy organisations - 27/03/17  @ 4pm.
  • Health Minister David Mowat and Department of Health - TBC
Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adult Workshops

14/03/2017 - Cottons Hotel and Spa, Manchester Rd, Knutsford. 7.30pm to 9.30pm  OR
23/03/2017 -  Novotel Manchester West, Worsley. 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

Are you confident you would recognise the signs and signals that might indicate potential abuse?
This event will raise your awareness of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and support you in dealing with situations involving suspected abuse or neglect to ensure you are confident in taking the right course of action. The workshop has recently been updated and now includes issues such as child sexual exploitation (CSE) and female genital mutilation (FGM).
The benefits of attending a face to face event include meeting a local expert safeguarding speaker who will explain local policies and procedures, and you will have the opportunity to work with colleagues to increase your confidence in this area.
Attending this meeting will help you pass the CPPE safeguarding e-assessment.  The Level 2 assessment allows you to prove your competence of level 2 safeguarding status as required by the patient safety criteria of the quality payments scheme as part of the 2017/2018 contractual framework, and Declaration of Competence for sexual health services.

More detailed objectives can be found on the CPPE website: https://www.cppe.ac.uk/programmes/l/safegrding-w-05/
There is no charge for the event and refreshments will be provided from 7pm.
The event is open to registered pharmacists, registered technicians and pre-registration trainees.
Book on to the event via the CPPE website: www.cppe.ac.uk  or by phoning 0161 778 4000

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Pilot started on 13th February 2017

Your Pharmacy should now have received your free campaign resources; to support the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) pilot.
This is a major public health campaign on a vitally important topic and we would strongly encourage you to do all you can to promote and support it actively in your pharmacy.
Doing so will mean you have taken part in one of your six health promotion campaigns for 2017, as Greater Manchester commissioners have identified AMR as one of this year’s campaigns.

FENTANYL PATCHES

Over the last couple of weeks it has been reported that another patient who was using fentanyl patches for pain has died of fentanyl toxicity.
The coroner’s investigation highlighted that the patient had lung cancer/ pneumonia / emphysema but died of fentanyl toxicity. The patient had general frailty due to their health issues.
The practice where the patient was registered contacted and advised all their patients who were using fentanyl patches about consequences of exposure to heat and using damaged patches. In addition, the practice has added a warning which has been attached to all prescriptions for fentanyl as follows:
Discard damaged patches, do not apply heat to site of patch; contact doctor if you have fever.

Regulatory authorities have received reports of life-threatening reactions and fatalities from fentanyl overdose occurring as a result of:

  • Inappropriate strength of fentanyl patches prescribed in opioid naïve patients
  • Failure to remove an old patch before applying a new fentanyl patch
  • Exposure of the patch application site to a heat source (e.g. hot bath, hot water bottle, electric blanket, heating pad etc.) or increased body temperature (e.g. fever)

Inadvertent ingestion of fentanyl patches

  • Poorly affixed fentanyl patches transferring to another person
  • Children applying improperly disposed patches to their body believing the patches to be stickers or plasters
  • Incidents such as these have been known to occur across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Appropriate use and dosing of fentanyl patches and other opioid analgesics is a prominent feature in local and national guidance.  The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has issued guidance on the safe use and disposal of fentanyl patches.

Quality Payments: Focus on MUR

This week’s Quality Payments tip guide covers MURs, one of the three advanced services that count towards the gateway criteria. Pharmacies must provide MURs, NMS or be registered to provide NUMSAS to qualify for any Quality Payments. The tip guide explains more about MURs.
