This Saturday, 2/11

In conjunction with the City of Oakland Walking Tours program, Oakland Urban Paths will be doing a special walk for Black History Month looking at some of the history of African Americans in Oakland. The walk will begin at AAMLO and finish at the courthouse by Lake Merritt. The walk is about 2 miles (3 including a return to the start) and mostly level.

Despite all the rain we’re getting now, the forecast for Saturday is sunny with a high of 60 degrees. Wear a hat as needed, comfortable walking shoes, and bring water.

As always, the walk is free, but please register so we know how many people to expect, and so we can update you if any changes are needed.

Start Location: AAMLO, 659 14th St, Oakland

Timing: Walk departs at 10am. Return by 12:30.

This Sunday, 2/12 Bicycle Tour
Wheels + Walls - The West Side

Back by popular demand (one of the biggest rides in 2016), The Wheels + Walls Mural Ride returns, to explore The West Side.

Follow us for a leisurely, scenic bike tour of West Oakland's most gorgeous murals.

Start Location: Bicycle Coffee Uptown, 1745 San Pablo Ave

Timing: Meet at 9:30am. We'll be riding out at 10:00am

The tour will end at Classic Cars West at 28th and Telegraph

As always, the gawking comes free!

Welcome to the WOBO Team!

We're happy to announce a new member to our board and so excited for the background and expertise she will bring!

Welcome Ella Wise to the Board of Directors!

Ella is a city planner at Dyett & Bhatia, Urban and Regional Planners, and previously worked at the Natural Resources Defense Council on sustainable land use and transportation policy. She originally hails from a small town in the Hudson River Valley in New York, and has had the privilege to live in Oakland for the past 4.5 years. She looks forward to learning from the many community members and activists working to make Oakland an even better place to live. In particular, she's interested in learning about and advocating for racially and socially just transportation policies and investments, reclaiming our public spaces (streets) from cars, and cultivating a healthier democracy through local activism.

Walk Oakland Bike Oakland (WOBO), with support from Bike East Bay, presents RiDE LiKE A GiRL, a 3-part bicycling skills workshop series designed for every woman who wants to ride.

Our Goal:

To get more women comfortable and confident on their bicycles, and feel connected with a community of women who want to bike!

Join in any or all of the workshops:

March 12 – Commuting Basics

June 11 – Finding the best bike for you
 September 9-10 – Bike Camping

Each workshop includes instruction time and time on your bike. A donation of $15 for each workshop or $35 for all three is suggested (free for current WOBO and Bike East Bay members). Purchase tickets here.

This month we welcome you on
Thursday February 23, at The Miranda at 1729 Broadway (near the 19th Street BART Bikestation).  We'll keep a couple of tables warm for you from 5:30 to 7:30pm.

WOBO hosts happy hours for women in Oakland each 4th Thursday of the month. Come spend some quality, off-the-bike time with other women who bike over a cold drink. Any level of rider and all women, trans and femme folks are warmly welcome. Bring your bikey and bike-curious friends!

We had an EXCEPTIONAL turnout for our first happy hour of 2017 at Spice Monkey. Let's keep it going!

Congrats to all the advocates that won important changes to USDOT FHWA's standards for measuring progress and performance with congested roadways. Looking forward to a less congested future with many more transportation options!
Quote Of The Month:

"While we’re proud of the good work of our parking enforcement officers, it’s never our preference to enforce our way to a good design. Plus, we don’t want people to think of Telegraph as just a place to get a parking ticket! So we’ll be introducing some new visual and physical cues to get the message across about where to drive, park, and bike."

-From the OakDOT 2017 Telegraph Avenue Progress Report, addressing the issue of cars parked in the new bike lanes.
