NEWCOMER THE FIGHTER PACKS A PUNCH

Going to the cinema is still looking to be an extremely popular pastime this February as last weekend’s takings for the top 15 titles beat the same weekend last year by 14%. Disney's Tangled remains at the top spot with its Box Office takings to date at £11.3m, surpassing The Princess & The Frog's £11.1m final gross.

Following in second place is The King's Speech, holding strong once again and fast approaching Slumdog Millionaire's £31.7m. David O. Russell's The Fighter packed a punch with a debut gross of £2.1m including previews. A personal best for the director.

It was Superbowl weekend in the US, with the Green Bay Packers taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL final. Film distributors used this opportunity to showcase high-profile TV spots of their upcoming releases, which are the most expensive TV spots in the world (with a single 30-second spot costing up to $2.6m!). This year's TV spots ranged from Pirates 4 to Transformers 3 and includied a 2nd teaser trailer for the mysterious J.J. Abrams project Super 8.

CHRISTIAN BALE IN CONCRETE ISLAND

Following on from Christian Bale’s 'Supporting Actor' Oscar nomination we have just heard that he has expressed an interest in working with director Brad Anderson and writer Scott Kosar on an adaptation of JG Ballard’s Concrete Island. The last time Bale, Anderson and Kosar got together, they bought us The Machinist.

Concrete Island is Ballard’s twisted take on Robinson Crusoe, one that sees wealthy architect Robert Maitland crashing off a motorway overpass in London on to a fenced-off wasteland where he squats largely unnoticed in the big city. When he realises he’s both injured and effectively cut off, he starts having to survive on whatever was in his Jaguar and anything he can scrounge from his bleak surroundings.

Given the fluid nature of films in development, Anderson is careful to say that Bale is interested in the film, but has a busy schedule. Still, the chance to not only revisit Ballard’s work for the first time since 1987’s Empire of the Sun, work again with his Machinist team and put his body through physical hardship as the Maitland character suffers? Sounds right up Bale’s street.
THE HANGOVER 2

NEESON TATTOOIST IN HANGOVER 2

Liam Neeson, who replaced Mel Gibson in the sequel to the hugely popular Hangover film told CNN this week that he plays “an Irish tattooist, strangely enough, living in Bangkok”.

The plot details remain strictly under wraps for the highly anticipated sequel although we do know that the film finds the original Hangover gang – Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) — heading to Thailand for Stu's wedding.

Neeson told CNN that he had a blast filming with his hilarious co-stars, whom he likens to a legendary comedy trio “the Three Stooges”.

The Hangover 2 is due out in cinemas this May.
