EXHIBITION "
SAFETY STRATEGIES: SPACE, GENDER AND THE CITY"

Exhibition from February 11th to 25th, 2017
Opening : Saturday February 11th, 2017 4PM

Facebook event

This exhibition foregrounds individuals "safety strategies" for negotiating the city as a space of danger but also strength, creativity, and agency.

The show is the result of the workshops Safety Strategies : Space, Gender and the City, led by Cynthia Hammond and Caroline Alexander at Studio XX and Concordia University in October 2016.

The exhibition will include the memory maps and written reflections. The installation will also include a drawing station where visitors can add to the collection of stories, maps, and strategies.

Safety Strategies is a collaborative art project that seeks to critically explore and creatively document how women and self-identified women, trans, members of the LGBTQ community, and women with limited mobility build a sense of safety when negotiating Montreal’s urban environments. While cities are often poorly designed and potentially dangerous, they are not unalterable. Spatial Strategies foregrounds the ways in which users negotiate and challenge the gendered dangers of cities.

Participants will be invited to explore the different possibilities for 3D printing by subverting the primary function of a 3D printer, so instead of producing a 3D plastic object, we will produce something two-dimensional: a collective experiment of 2D drawings on canvas using a 3D printer.
