March 2017

Check out some of our favorite memories and accomplishments from 2016 in this Keep Durham Beautiful video collage!
The birds will start chirping and the bees will start buzzing soon! It's time for us to get outdoors and start working on our gardens. If you are new to gardening and are planning to start your own veggie garden, we have some tips for you:
  • Your garden should receive a minimum of 6 hours of sun per day, 8-10 hours is ideal
  • Your garden should be located near your house (this will make you use it!)
  • Your soil should be fertile and easy to till; loose, well-drained loam is preferable; sandy and clay soils are fine as long as you add organic matter
  • Avoid soggy soils that remain wet after it rains
  • Your garden needs 1" of water/week; please water in addition to rain
  • Your garden should have good air drainage - should be on high ground
  • and the FUN part-plan what type of veggies you want to grow
  • Start planting after the LAST frost date- April 13th
  • Be prepared to dedicate half an hour of work per day to your garden

Healthy Bee, Healthy Me Pollinator Garden Recipients Meet to Network and Socialize

On Saturday, February 25, 2017, eleven of our Healthy Bee, Healthy Me Pollinator Garden recipients had the opportunity to meet & mingle. Participants learned about the importance of providing nectar and pollen sources for our birds, bees, and butterflies and about local resources available for community gardens from Durham County Master Gardener, Cheralyn Berry. Garden representatives enjoyed homemade crepes and frittata, played pollinator bingo and were challenged in a pollinator-themed word search (with prizes of course!). This was a great way to bring together some of Durham's community gardens to swap ideas, best methods, and share a love for pollinators!

Engaging the Latino Community to Create Environmental Ambassadors

We've been working with 11 8th grade Latino students enrolled in the Enlaces program of the Duke Office of Durham and Regional Affairs at Rogers-Herr Middle School since October 2016.The students have been learning about recycling and litter prevention to create an educational recycling video with Spanish subtitles and a presentation. They will also participate in I Love Durham Limpio, an initiative to recruit Latinos and non-Latinos in a widespread litter cleanup on April 29, 2017.
