Celebrating Women’s Achievements

This opening article is inspired by a few related coincidences that I discovered last year.

In the conference and events industry we come across many different women and men and in this first issue for 2017 we would like to shout out to women.

Business Retreats Australia (BRA) as an event agent acts as a bridge between our clients and suppliers, and we have had the privilege to encounter some truly amazing, strong and powerful women on both sides of that bridge.
You are welcome to read more about our personal achievements in 2016 in our Blog.

I was invited by an industry colleague to the Business Chicks breakfast in Melbourne. Sophia Amuroso was the guest speaker.
I was pleasantly surprised, impressed and truly inspired by Sophia’s quiet, strong and introverted presence.
She represents strong women, who keep going, don’t give up, learn from the experiences and most importantly support each other.   Continue Reading...

Destination...Barossa Valley
Renowned around the world for its excellent wines and local food produce the Barossa Valley has much to offer as a destination.  Food and wine? Yes please! The drive, just an hour outside of Adelaide, will take you via rolling hills and quaint country towns.  The region, about 25km long, is home to more than five towns, ranging in population from 4,000 to as few as 500. Each town has its own unique characteristics and specialisations making them all worth stopping at on your way! Home to over 150 wineries and cellar doors, the Barossa Valley has built a reputation for producing wines that hold their own on the world stage of wines. In particular, Shiraz produced in the Barossa Valley has enjoyed success worldwide. If it takes your fancy, tours of some of the world’s oldest vineyards dating back to 1845 are available to visitors of the region.  Settled here you will find iconic names such as Penfolds, Jacob’s Creek and Seppeltsfield, who all welcome visitors and tour groups. Good wine goes hand in hand with good food and so naturally many of the vineyards in the area also have restaurants in which to dine and cooking classes are also available. We have featured some of the most unique venues across Australia and for this issue we wanted to show you the Adelaide Zoo. 2016 Personal Highlights
For Stacey, 2016 was the year of the Ironman triathlon.  She signed up for the Ironman in Bussleton, WA in the Autumn of 2016 and spent the rest of the year training diligently for it. Whilst juggling, kids, work and other daily commitments, she found the training demanding but rewarding. The distances for an Ironman are - swim 3.8km, cycle 180km and run 42kms.  By race day on the 4th of December, she was feeling as well prepared as she could be.  Describing it as the perfect race, Stacey sailed through her first Ironman finishing 5th in her age category with a final time of 11:06. Stacey has since said that it was one of the best days ever.
The most memorable moment for Katarina in 2017 was her first trip to the USA in August 2017. In particular the five days spent on the back of an Indian motorcycle travelling from Nashville to Pittsburgh with her husband. It was an ideal way to see the amazing landscapes from Tennessee all the way to South Pennsylvania. She also had the opportunity to meet a number of the American people and discover their views regarding the imminent election.  The trip ended in NY where the people offered an alternative perspective to the election and the mood of this diverse nation at this important time in its history.
Blog - Virtual Reality
In a world with ever-changing technology, Virtual Reality is the next big thing. Whether it’s used for games or training, virtual reality is becoming a mainstream tool used in conferences and events.
Virtual reality is a computerised simulation of real life. By way of replicating colours, sounds and other sensations, the simulation has the ability to add the user’s physical presence into a real or imagined environment. The user has the ability to interact with the environment by physically moving around. Typically virtual reality is simulated through a projector, computer screen, or through the use of special goggles. In the past virtual reality has been used as a tool for military training, flight simulations and medical situations. The benefit of virtual reality in these situations is that it allows the user to train and learn from the experience without having the real-world consequence of failing.

Book Review by Katarina Cobain

Burial Rites byHannah Kent

This book evokes feelings of stillness and softness contradictory but also in hand with the sombre topic of Iceland’s last public execution in 1829.  If you like history, the mystery of Iceland and the beautiful writing, describing emotions and lives of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, then you will love this book.
At the beginning of the book we are introduced to a small family on a remote farm and the outrageous news that they will be holding a murderess in their home until the execution. As you read on and realise what is happening and who is who you will be intrigued and in high anticipation to meet the culprit, Agnes Magnúsdóttir. And you will not be disappointed. Agnes is such a strong and direct presence that she will grip into you and hold on. But don’t be impatient, go with the flow of the book and let it take you to its glorious end, my favourite part of the book.
Through Agnes’ confessions to Tóti, the priest members of the family will discover the journey that brought Agnes to her horrible end. At no point does Agnes falter or admit to any wrongdoing. She’s an anchor gripping onto people’s lives forever connected with nature, life and death. The other characters are confronted by their own lives, not too dissimilar from Agnes’ and their own mortality that is always present in the harsh Icelandic climate and remoteness. People’s livelihood and survival depends on life’s rituals, every day jobs cyclical year in and year out, from one season to the other.
The fact that this is a real life story and that the records of the events are held in archives from 200 years ago makes this book hit so much closer to the bone.
