Household Hazardous Waste
Household hazardous waste or HHW refers to the products used in the home that are flammable, toxic, explosive or corrosive. Whilst many HHW products are made from materials can be recycled and may display a recycling symbol on the product label, it is important that these items are not placed in any of your household bins as they can pose a significant safety risk to both workers and equipment.
Instead HHW can be dropped off at a range of collection sites in Western Australia through the Household Hazardous Waste program, as funded by the Waste Authority.
Accepted materials included in the program are:
• Acids and alkalis
• Aerosols
• Batteries (household)
• Engine coolants and glycols
• Fire extinguishers – non-halon (red) only
• Flammables
• Flares
• Fluorescent lamps and tubes
• Gas cylinders (small household)
• Household chemicals (e.g. cleaners)
• Paint
• Pesticides/herbicides
• Poisons/toxics
• Pool chemicals
• Smoke detectors
• Unknown chemicals (must be sealed, chemical resistant containers)
To find drop off locations near you, download the Recycle Right app and visit the ‘Find my nearest’ section. For more information about the collection scheme, visit wasteauthority.wa.gov.au/programs/funded-programs/household-hazardous-waste/.
