Celebrating our 76th Birthday and the Bicentenary of the Marist Institute and 150 years of Marist in South Africa and Africa.

The science of educating our young people has led to many innovations. New technologies have allowed for more diverse experiences. I'm not suggesting parents should not question and be advocates for their children, but what I am suggesting is that the course of action that will yield the best results is to work hand-in-hand with the professionals.
Teachers, principals, school support staff, interventionists, and on and on, work tirelessly to achieve the best possible outcome for every student. The relationship that exists between education professionals and parents can sometimes be counterproductive to the positive outcomes we all seek for our students. But, when parents understand the complexities of teaching and learning and set aside the paradigm of their own student experience, we can attempt to work together. It's through cooperation, instead of hostility that will allow for more students to access the education they deserve to reach the future that they all desire.
Are there fads and trends in education? Sure. Do certain methods and practices work better for particular students? Of course. How we navigate through the maze of teaching and learning will shape the future.
What's most important to keep in mind, is that parents and teachers want the same thing. Parents we want their children to have happy, productive lives. They want to protect them from the dangers of the world. They want them to be better than they are.
As a teacher, we want the exact thing for our students. And as Jerry Maguire so eloquently stated, "Help me, help you!”.
Let’s strive for support across all facets of school life particularly with behaviour and discipline, so that we continue to take our school from strength to strength.
On Monday 6 February, nine boys from Grade 7 & 6 took part in the inter schools general knowledge quiz held at Beaulieu Prep. They were Ethan Kalell, Ben Fourie, Connor Woods, Jack Latilla- Campbell, Liam Nel, Chazya Siwale, Andrew Kleinhans, Thomas Purchase and Luke Jackson.
Seven schools participated in the quiz. St David's, Beaulieu, St Peter's Boys, St Peter's Girls, Brescia House, Kyalami Prep and Christchurch Prep. There were eight rounds. Each round was a different topic such as flags of countries, mixed bag, sport, famous people, current affairs, literature, popular films and music. Each round had between 7 and 10 questions. Our boys found some of the questions easy, some challenging and others were a lot of fun. St David’s came second overall. Beaulieu beat us by 2 points. The boys were so excited and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, they did St David's proud. Well done boys we are proud of your effort.

COLLEGE NEWS
Academic Awards Evening:
Congratulations to the following boys
We offer lessons in the following instruments: piano, guitar, drums, saxophone, trumpet and voice. Currently we have seven teachers, who are here on certain afternoons on a contract basis.
The cost for these lessons this year is R195 per 30-minute lesson.
Many parents contacted us towards the end of last year. These boys’ names are on our waiting list. Our instrument teachers are in the process of organising lessons with their current students. Once they have completed this process, they will be able to look at new students. We thank you for your patience.
If you have any queries, please email Mrs Susanne Human (humans@stdavids.co.za) or Mr Chris Luke (lukec@stdavids.co.za).
Reflection for the week:
The goodness of the Lord goes beyond our human abilities. We have come to appreciate what He has done in the past. It is the past experiences with the Lord that informs us that great things awaits us in our lives. God has never failed, His record is clean, He holds no failure record. He has always kept his promises.
