RGHS Weekly Bulletin 10 February 2017

View this email in your browser
Over the past two weeks we have all been feeling the added responsibility of ensuring we play our part in conserving the small supply of water that the city has.  I’m sure many of you have joined in praying for rain to fall in our catchment areas along with reducing the consumption of water in your homes.  I applaud the Earth Children for making our community more aware of our role in ensuring we use our water wisely.

We had about 192 Grade 7 girls visiting the school at our Open Evening for invited schools and I am grateful to Ms Geila Wills for all the work she put into making this event a great success.  Those of you who had daughters participating in the event would have been incredibly proud.  The beautiful toe tapping music from the jazz band, soul moving singing from the choir and mature, insightful speeches by the girls made the event even more special, again, showcasing that Rustenburg girls know how to add a touch of class to such events.  My thanks also go to each of the girls who acted as tour guides and those who provided refreshments for the visitors. We are looking forward to our next Open Evening this Wednesday 15 February.

It was a privilege to attend a lovely event at the German Ambassador’s home on Tuesday evening with Ms Renée Fourie, a member of my Senior Management Team and head of the German Department.  It is such an wonderful opportunity for our girls that we offer both French and German at the school, again underlining our desire to raise strong independent woman as leaders and ambassadors for our nation.

With the deadline for scholarship applications today, the work begins in the recruitment process for our Grade 8 class of 2018.  We are constantly looking forward as a school and know that your daughter(s) will be encouraged to play their part in achieving their best in Sport, Academics, Art and Cultural pursuits.

General Notices

Midterm Break Friday 17 February:

As mentioned in last week’s bulletin, Rustenburg Girls’ High School will be having a midterm break for learners on Friday, 17 February 2017.  Learners will not come to school on that day, as the staff will be participating in a Staff Development workshop on Implicit Bias.

The workshop will allow ALL Rustenburg staff, to have conversations around identity and transformation.

The key focus of the workshop is:
- exploring the impact that Implicit Bias has on schools and how this is reflected in recent school protests
learning how Cultural Intelligence skills and attributes can help schools transform and prepare their learners for a culturally diverse world

Alternative Drop-Off Areas
Download a map of the alternative off-site drop off areas. Please be aware that the subway gate only opens at 3pm every afternoon. We advise parents to pick up between 3 and 3:30 pm.

Cycling to school
We are encouraging girls who live in the area to cycle to school more regularly. A new bike shed has been erected and we are hoping that the trend of cycling to school will increase, which will further improve our traffic congestion.

Use of outdoor gym equipment
Please note that the outdoor gym is not a play area for younger children and should only be used by High School pupils for exercise.

It's all relative

2017 saw the welcome return to Rustenburg of Mrs Lindsay de Klerk (née Kalis), after a sojourn at The Settlers and Rondebosch Boys’. One of Mrs de Klerk’s neighbours in the English passage is Mrs Mallon, risky at best if it were not for the fact that Mrs de Klerk and Mrs Mallon are second cousins. Read more...
