Round Two Qualifying for James W. Paul Derby
Second-round qualifying action for Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby takes place this afternoon, February 11.
All 32 of the Greyhounds from round one will compete today in four qualifying events, and then again in round three on Wednesday, February 15, of the afternoon card. The top 16 point earners following the third round will move on to the sweet sixteen, being contested Sunday afternoon, February 19. The final eight will then compete in the championship final Saturday afternoon, February 25. The following is a quick rundown of this afternoon’s qualifiers:
In Race 10, impressive round-one winner, #6, WICKED TWISTA (DYNA NALIN* - LUXURIOUS TRENT, North Shore Kennel), will absolutely be the post time favorite and could easily move into round three undefeated.
Moving on to Race 12, there is little doubt amongst handicappers that #6, O YA MAYBELLINE (DEFRIM BALE* - O YA NORMA, Janie Carroll Kennel), should enter the third-round of qualifying with an unblemished record.

Janice Dean Weathers Storm to Win He's My Man Classic
The forecast was for a beautiful and cool day at Palm Beach Kennel Club. Over on the Fox News Network, meteorologist Janice Dean was forecasting a cool and beautiful day of racing weather for one of Palm Beach Kennel Club’s biggest days of racing, the final of the $50,000 He’s My Man Classic
Also in West Palm Beach, Janice’s four-legged counter-part had a winning forecast in mind for herself. As it turned out, The Weather Machine came roaring down the homestretch like a strong frontal system coming through south Florida and leaving the competition out in the cold.
In the finale, it was the early speed contenders rushing to the first turn. Entering the backstretch, it was a see-saw battle between race favorite BIG RED DOG and 14-1 longshot KB’S KATANA. But lurking not far behind were two of the Classic’s biggest finishers, JANICE DEAN and BARTS BIG BANG. Entering the final turn, KB’S KATANA won the battle with “Clifford” the BIG RED DOG whilst Janice and the Big Bang were slowly reeling her in. In the sprint to reach the championship finish line first, it was “The Weather Machine” JANICE DEAN blowing through like a Florida cold front to lay claim to the 2017 $50,000 He’s My Man Classic championship.
The champ covered the 545-yard Royal Palm Course in a speedy clocking of 29.68 seconds and going off at odds 2.80, returning a respectable $7.60 to her many, many happy supporters.

Iron Dog Challenge Moves to Razorback Course in Round 2
The eight greyhounds vying for the first stakes win of the season completed round one action on Super Sunday, as they tackled the shortest of the three distances to be competed on in the $20,000 Iron Dog Challenge Stakes at Southland Park.
The first distance was the 583-yard Arkansas Course, where a mild upset occurred when T and T Kennel’s XKT JON SCHNABEL used a rare quick break to win a stretch battle with Charter Kennel’s BARTS GIRL to win by a mere ½ length. With nearly 12 to one odds, the black male stopped the clock with the second fastest time of the day on the course (32.00 flat), while returning a nice $25.40 to win to his backers.
If round one was any indication of what we can look forward to for the next two legs of this event, we are in for a treat. The separation between first and fifth was less than four lengths and even the last place greyhound (TNT YUKON GOLD) was only seven lengths back from the winner.
Round two will be contested over the 660-yard Razorback Course, where many in the field of eight have had history of competing on. The following is a preview for each greyhound and their current point standings in the event.

Star Rising in bestbet Derby Final
The finals of the 2017 bestbet Derby turned out to be another fantastic battle, all the way around the racetrack, just to see who would get the nod at the wire. The classic clash of early and late speed was in full display, but in the end one greyhound clearly came home as the winner.
Breezing down the backside, Rusty came rumbling past the 660-yard starting box and out came the greyhounds. As Joe Ross bellowed out the “And they’re off”, LK’S CENTURIA took over command. Seizing the lead from the first few steps, she was instantly in control of this race. She was not alone though. Clearly her early two length advantage put her on her way, but she was stalked through the early turn by OMEGA POINT and BARTS RISINGSTAR.
TEMPO ROCK led the chase pack behind the trio as they all just looked to find room rounding the bend and up the frontstretch. Toward the first turn call they went with LK’S CENTURIA holding an easy lead over the rest, but things were changing behind her. Risingstar bullied his way by OMEGA POINT and took over the prime chasing spot as TEMPO ROCK saved ground on the rail.
