Message from the CWRA President Dave Murray

Hello <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>,

Our January 27th Water Roundtable in Ottawa on Extreme Weather was a very successful event and has created some momentum on how Canada’s water should be managed into the future.  The topic of how infrastructure will be impacted by changing weather patterns is very topical and I am preparing for a talk in Victoria next week on this and reflecting on all I heard in Ottawa.  While the jury is still out on trends in rainfall etc. depending on what watershed or region you are in, the cost of the impacts of extreme weather is rising and so we know infrastructure needs upgrading.  A sizable portion of Canada’s water infrastructure is considered inadequate not even considering possible climate change effects.  Now we shouldn’t get depressed about this though, it’s an opportunity for CWRA to do what we do best, facilitate exchange of information and encourage collaboration to get long-term results.  CWRA is uniquely positioned as a cross section of water professionals across Canada and this can be very powerful.

The goodwill generated in Ottawa and the collaboration between different government departments, academics and private industry can make a difference. CWRA is now considering what the next step is to advance the idea of national cooperation on water management.

The program will address the best (and worst) approaches and solutions to interjurisdictional water management on the continent, with a view to influencing future public policy. The 2017 Conference will explore how water has been exploited, managed, protected, and shared as it crosses jurisdictional boundaries in North America.
When submitting an abstract, you will be requested to indicate your choice of theme and sub-theme, and to specify your preference for either an oral or a poster presentation, or a Pecha Kucha style concise presentation.  Abstracts accepted until February 28, 2017

Canada and the US Developing a Joint Hydrographic Data Model

 Participation Requested

What data do you need as a hydrologist?  Please take this online survey on Canada’s hydrographic needs (English) (français).

In partnership with CSHS, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) are working with the US Geological Survey (USGS) to develop a new data model for hydrography for both the U.S. and Canada.  Work on this hydrographic harmonization data model (H2M) will begin shortly.  The intent is to provide relevant H2M data and services that are directly of benefit to hydrologists and others using hydrologic models or other water related applications. You are invited to take a survey designed to determine data needs of Canada’s hydrologists and water resources specialists.  The results of the survey will directly influence the data model development.  This is important because the federal government is committed to supporting the new data model through the provision of data and services.  The links to the English and French versions of the survey can be found here and here, respectively.  It should take you about 30 to 40 minutes.  Thank you for your participation!

Principles of Hydrologic Modelling UW Graduate Course  and Professional Short Course
June 12 - 17, 2017

This course addresses the development of computational models of watershed hydrology in support of water resources management and scientific investigation. The full model development and application cycle is considered: pre-processing, understanding, and generating input forcing data; system discretization and algorithms for simulating hydrologic processes; parameter estimation; and interpreting model output in the context of often significant system uncertainty. The course will include practical applications of models to alpine, boreal forest, prairie, and agricultural settings in Canada.

Incorporating green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) into the management of rain water is increasingly becoming a necessity. Using examples from Canada and the United States, we will discuss practical strategies for municipalities and communities wishing to incorporate GSI into their landscape. We also will introduce a new tool, the Stormwater Scorecard, developed in partnership with the Canadian Freshwater Alliance, designed to help communities understand how they are doing in terms of managing rain where it falls, as well as benchmark progress across Canada.
