Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - March 6th, 2017

Dear Friends:

I had a nice surprise on Friday. I got a phone call from Michael Watt, the co-owner of Ronnie Scott's in London. Ronnie Scott's is one of the most famous jazz clubs in the world and certainly the most prestigious one in England. They, like the Village Vanguard, have a long legacy of supporting this music and a pedigree of famous jazz artists that have performed there through the years. Michael called me on Friday to offer his congratulations on the work we've been doing at Smalls and Mezzrow and our initiative to support our artists. We had a very pleasant and affable conversation. He jokingly asked me about my yacht - tongue in cheek, clearly understanding how tenuous our financial situation can be. He then offered us a yearly donation of $5000 to our musician revenue share account, to be distributed to the musicians based on our royalty payout system. After a few more pleasantries we said good bye. After the conversation I felt so happy to know that our work and the work of our artists here is not going unnoticed. Our little clubs are having an impact on the world's culture and there are classy people like Michael Watt who simply want to say thanks and show their support. It gave me encouragement and confidence that we are on the right track. It also showed to me the solidarity between venues that can exist. Jazz is a family and one that extends through out the globe. My thanks to Michael for this wonderful support.

This Sunday is our first SmallsLIVE Workshop featuring tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm. Tickets are available to any student or anyone interested (CLICK HERE). The SmallsLIVE Workshop will be a corner stone in our educational initiative. Please feel free to check it out if you are interested.

As usual, we have a wonderful week of music ahead. I sincerely hope to see everyone at the club.

Joel Frahm is one of the most revered improvising jazz artists currently performing. He is a saxophone virtuoso with an highly-creative, free form approach to jazz music. SmallsLIVE Workshop presents Joel Frahm in an open and interactive forum. This is open to anyone who is interested but particularly for saxophonists and improvising musicians. Joel will be working interactively with students and taking questions from the audience.
