New PSA Resources For Emergency Contraception Now Available
PSA has released new guidelines and resources for pharmacists following changes to the scheduling of emergency contraception (EC) medicines in Australia.
From 1 February 2017, pharmacists can supply ulipristal (EllaOne ®) to women as a Pharmacist Only medicine (Schedule 3). Ulipristal is now approved for supply as EC up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected intercourse. This increases the options available for pharmacists to supply EC, with levonorgestrel remaining approved for up to 72 hours (three days) after unprotected intercourse.
PSA has updated its Guidelines for the provision of emergency contraception.
A webinar and update meeting will be held 7 March 2017. Pharmacists can register here.
New Schedule Three specific packaging is on the way. During the transition, packaging and labeling exemptions have been secured from all State and Territory Health Departments to enable the Prescription Only medicine (Schedule 4) pack and labeling to be supplied by pharmacists in Australia as a Schedule Three medicine.
Further information on ulipristal can be found in Australian Prescriber

The module includes a list of websites for evidence and resources suitable for pharmacy use.
