Voices Newsletter

Reaching over 1500 people in the community and the university, this newsletter promotes patient and community involvement in health professional education at UBC.


Patient & Community Voices Workshop Series

Back by popular demand, an encore workshop, featuring The Caregiver's Journey, was held on February 20th. Twenty-five students from nine different health programs participated. With over 100 students on the waitlist, the group will offer the workshop again in April. Stay tuned!

Coming in March:

UBC Aphasia Mentors Program: Learning from the Experts
March 16th  2:30-5pm


The Aphasia Mentors Program was created to help students understand the impact of this loss of communication ability on the lives of those living with aphasia. Students will learn from people with Aphasia and about the basics of Supported Communication for People with Aphasia (SCA), an evidence-based, best practice communication training.

Coming in April:

Positive Reflections and Voices Unheard: Learning from Persons Living with HIV

Students will be introduced to the challenges of living with HIV through personal stories and reflections of community members living with this health concern. Students will also receive information about support and advocacy resources available within Vancouver-based community organizations serving persons living with HIV. The workshop is led by community educators from Positive Living Society BC.

The Caregiver’s Journey: Heartbreak and Love

A panelist of caregivers will introduce students to the successes and challenges of being a family caregiver for a loved one with a chronic health condition. Through stories and small group discussions, students will learn about the unique experience of working with family caregivers.

Workshops are eligible for 30 exposure level points in the Interprofessional Education Passport.

Health Mentors Recognized at Annual Meeting



On January 30th, Health Mentors from cohort 5 were recognized at an annual meeting of their peers. Mentors were presented with a certificate and group photo by program director, Dr. Angela Towle.

The event was also an opportunity for new and returning mentors to learn from one another and begin to prepare for the upcoming symposium in April.

What: Health Mentors Symposium
When: April 25, 5:30-7:30pm.
Where: UBC Life Sciences Atrium

Health Mentors program participants will share what they have learned about chronic disease self-management and health care team work.

The Health Mentors Program is a 16-month course that helps health care students learn about living with chronic disease or disability from the perspective of patients and families.
 


Couples needed for PULSE stroke study

Partners Using Linked Strategies Effectively (PULSE) needs couples to participate in a research study.

The main goal is to understand how partners shape each other's health behaviors (like physical activity and diet) post stroke. Read more...
