 The Cascade Mycological Society (CMS) announces an intermediate to advanced, two day fungal identification workshop. The workshop will be lead by Mycologist Ron Hammil, with assistance from Lane Community College (LCC) Biology instructor Susie Holmes.

Dates:  March 9th & 10th, 2017, 9am to 5pm

Location:  LCC Science Building (room to be announced)

Workshop Limit: 8 persons

Cost:  $125.00

Prerequisite: Comfortable to confident with dichotomous keys. CMS Membership is not required.

Assembling the fungi: A fast paced workshop for higher level fungal identification of Basidiomycetes and Ascomycetes. Learn techniques and tips for collection and curation of macro-fungi. We’ll learn to record salient features of fresh collections and cover chemical reactions. We’ll discuss how to find associated literature and or web resources for doing accurate IDs. Much of the time will be devoted to slide preparation and microscopic character analysis.

Ron Hamill is a Mycologist and Botanist with over 20 years of experience surveying, identifying and recording fungi species throughout western North America. He was a founding member of the Cascade Mycological Society, and is a member of the Mycological Society of America, the Pacific Northwest Key Council, and the North American Mycological Association (NAMA). He has been the lead identifier for the Mount Pisgah Arboretum Mushroom Festival for the last 20 years and has added hundreds of species to the show's cumulative list. He recently participated in identifying for the NAMA National Foray at Eatonville, Wa.


Susan Holmes has a B.S. in Botany from Oregon State University and a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon.  Susan is a full-time science instructor at Lane Community College, a founding member of the Cascade Mycological Society, past CMS board member and a member of the Pacific Northwest Key Council.  At LCC, one of the many science classes she teaches is the Biology of Mushrooms.  In addition, she coordinates the LCC students collection, storage, and identification of mushrooms for the annual Mount Pisgah Arboretum Mushroom Festival.
