Newsletter - Week 1

Hi JD's

Welcome to Week One! I hope you're as excited as we are for a new year of the RMIT JD! However if you have found the fresh year excitement has already worn off... take a breath - we have just what you need....

Join us Friday 17th March at 5:30pm in 13.3.13 for free cheese and wine tasting!!!
...And our first General Meeting of the year where we will be voting in our executive
team and committee!
Come along and meet the RMIT LSS Team and your fellow JD students. Check out the positions available on the LSS website and send through your exec nominations or expressions of interest for committee positions through the form on our website at www.rmitlss.com/committee
Can't make it in person? No worries, contact our president about phone/online conference options or send through your proxy with this form.

All RMIT LSS positions have been formed with consideration of the uniquely high demands post-graduate JD students often experience on their time. As such positions are flexible, can be shared, are supported and there are plenty of opportunities for short-term commitments or project specific involvement as well!

Keep an eye out for the RMIT 2017 Intro Guide written by our VP Mieke Matimba for info, tips and tricks to help you make the most out of your time with RMIT!

Thanks to all those who came along to the 'Get to know you pizza' event last week. Check out some happy snaps below..

Need to renew your LSS Membership? Want to sign up? You can do both here!

Negotiation Training: Negotiation competitions involve two teams of two solicitors each meeting to discuss a dispute between their clients. Each team is provided with a description of the fact scenario with some facts known to both teams and others secret to each. Each team is also given instructions from their client detailing exactly what outcomes they should seek and what should be avoided at all costs. The negotiation itself can last up to an hour then each team is given the chance to review their own performance and a winner is picked! This isn't always the team that walked away with the better deal, but the one who gets results closest to their client's wishes.

Vis East Moot in Hong Kong

For the first time this year, RMIT will be fielding a team in one of the most presitigious (and fun!) international law competitions on the planet: the Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition in Hong Kong.
Our team - composed of Megan Clover, Olivia Dean, Elise Steegstra and Marc Zanier - were selected in October 2016 after an open call for applications.  They have been working hard over the summer months on their written submissions.
They've now turned their attention to their oral moot submissions.
As part of their prep, last week the team competed strongly in a "Pre-Moot" competition organised by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Australia) and held at Corrs Chambers Westgarth against all the four other Melbourne-based teams going to Vis this year.
This was great prep for what is to come: Over a week in late March, they'll be competing against over 130 other teams fielded from Law schools from around the world, networking with peers from across the globe, and enjoying the sights and sounds of Hong Kong to boot.
GSBL and RMIT Global Mobility have partnered with the LSS to make this amazing opportunity happen.

More info about the moot can be found here: http://www.cisgmoot.org
To register your interest in the 2017-18 Vis competition, please email competitions@rmitlss.com.
Participation in other mooting competitions, and completion of "Advocacy Skills" and "International Business Law" JD subjects will be highly regarded.
