Hi Moms and Dads

This newsletter will be emailed every Monday to those of you on our mailing list. We would rather email to keep 'paper wise', but if you need a hard copy please let Jane know in the office and she will put one in your child's message pocket. Each child has a message pocket outside their classroom. Chat to your child's teacher and she will show you where your pocket is situated. An enlarged version of the newsletter will also be put up outside your child’s classroom. If both parents would like a copy of this newsletter, please let Jane know and we will gladly send to both email addresses.
Please read these Monday Newsletters each week as IMPORTANT and all relevant information about the school, your children's classroom activities and the functions at the school will be written in it.
This newsletter is a very important form of communication.
Our functions and activities have been written up in the section 'Dates to diarise.' Please have a read. More information on these events will follow shortly, to explain them more fully.

Sea Horse

Welcoming all parents to week 6.
IQ theme: Feelings
EQ theme: Doing something brave
                    Overcoming feelings of fear
Firstly I would like to thank all parents that sent their child’s photo as requested, there are still photos that I haven’t received yet. Please send it this week.
And then a thank you to Candice for opening up the group chat on behalf of the Seahorse class.
We have been sitting down a lot this week as a whole group, discussing how feelings affect our well-being. They are now understanding how to control their emotions and also knowing what the outcomes are, should any anger or unfriendliness occur. We have mainly focused on how brave a child would be to be able to control the way we play with our friends and how friends will feel if we hurt their feelings and how we ourselves will feel knowing that we hurt our friends.
This week we will have ‘show and tell’ about our favourite shoes. Your child can wear those shoes to school if they wish to do so.
Penguin and Seahorse class will be having a MAD HATTERS TEA PARTY ON FRIDAY. The hat is to be made at home and warn to school on Friday. If there are any parents who would like to send something towards the tea party you are gladly welcome to eg. Cookies, cupcakes marshmallow , marie biscuits etc.
On Saturday will be our mini walk and the Seahorse class will be manning the "throw the bean bag game", I would appreciate if there are any parents willing to help man the game.
There will be a roster put up outside our classroom door with times to help.
Please fill in the time that you will be available

EQ: Solving a problem
General: SHAPES 2 d circle, square etc
Language: Writing my name correctly Letter ‘O’ ‘o’ octopus, orange, Ollie
Maths: Sorting and matching using colour, shape and number.
The AGM is on Tuesday. I urge you all to attend this event as after the AGM you will go to our class for a discussion about our daily programme, the curriculum, school and class rules and how we discipline. It would be great if both parents can attend but I do hope that at least one parent will attends
Mini Walk on Saturday 25 February Our class is in charge of the Treasure Hunt. Please put your name on the roster outside the class if you are willing to help at the stall.
SHARK group cake sale Friday 3 March. We are the first class to host a cake sale. We need to provide small cupcakes, popcorn, fudge, marshmallows dipped in chocolate, iced marie biscuit faces etc for the school. Each parent needs to provide a minimum of 20 items. If you are unable to bake then I suggest you buy cupcakes at Horton's Shop behind Pep/ opposite the back of Shoprite.
EQ This week we will recap emotions, being a good friend and being responsible for your actions. I will continue to use role play to discuss solving problems in a positive manner. When problems arose last week eg not sharing toys or pencil crayons we discussed how we can resolve the problem and also how each child feels and the appropriate manner in which to respond.
Please remember to extend our EQ theme at home and try the listen and do or speak once policy.  I encourage you to give an instruction once. Get your child to repeat the instruction and then go and do it. If they do not do it, do not repeat the instruction but call them and ask them to repeat the instruction again, ask them why they are not doing it and then ask them to go and follow through with the action or task. We tend to speak and repeat ourselves constantly and children just switch off and do not listen. We need to teach them to listen carefully and to respond appropriately.
Every day we remind the children to pack their bags and are encouraging them to take responsibility of their belongings- lunch boxes and clothes. At present they are doing very well. General Theme. We will be learning about the 2 d Shapes - circles, triangles, rectangles etc. When travelling to school or in your home ask your children to identify shapes in your home or in the environment. I will be asking them to bring various objects from home that are a specific shape. This week I am challenging the children to try and remember to bring things without assistance from you.
Language. This week we will do letter O o . Thank you for helping your child bring things last week. On Tuesdays the children are encouraged to bring objects that start with the letter we are learning. They can bring real objects or pictures that are drawn or cut from a magazine. This activity provides the perfect opportunity for you to spend quality time with your child.
Maths. We will continue to do the days of the week, months of the year and seasons throughout the year.  Please continue to help us to teach your child their date of birth.  We are classifying objects and shapes according to colour, shape and number. We have been teaching the children about patterns and sequencing and they are doing very well at making their own pattern when drawing and are able to copy a sequence when threading or doing pegboards.
Every day we discuss the weather and the drought. When using the taps they are encouraged to use a trickle. We compare the temperature from one day to the next and work out which day was the hottest. Next month we will introduce the minimum temperature and compare it to the maximum. I encourage you to let your children watch the weather report show them where we live, let them listen for the temperatures and record them to bring to school. This is a good maths exercise and we use terminology such as equal, more than, less than, the most or least.
IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER.
Tues 21 Feb AGM and Parents evening. I will discuss the Grade R Language, Maths and Life Skills Programme.
Sat 25 Feb Mini walk.
Fri 3 March Shark Class Cake Sale
We wish you a happy week.

IQ:  My body
Focus:  Gross Motor skills
Number Concepts:  Number 2, Recognising number 2
Thank you to all those Starfish families who joined us on Friday night for our Class Picnic at school.  We were blessed with a wind free evening.  It was lovely to get to mingle with you and have fun with the children in the garden.
We continue to discuss "My Body" and "Doing something brave, overcoming feelings of fearfulness".  Thank you for encouraging your children to bring books to do with our theme.  Please remember your child's baby photo and one of them now, so we can compare how their bodies have changed.  We continue to focus on Gross Motor skills this week.  We have been talking about being Body Smart and ways to exercise and keep our bodies healthy and strong.  Please continue to encourage your child to use their large muscles by swimming, cycling, climbing, walking and playing ball games with them.  Their large muscles impact on their small muscles which are needed to be strong for holding a pencil or scissors correctly for writing and cutting.
Please play games with them involving numbers 1 and 2.  Look for the numbers in their environment, e.g. when shopping or house numbers when walking.  Ask them, "What do you have 1 or 2 of on your body"
Look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday evening 21 February at 7pm for our annual AGM and Class discussions.  This is when I get to explain what goes on in the Starfish class and important information about our school.
Please remember this Saturday 25 February is our FHPPS mini walk.  Your child will be receiving their orange T-shirts this week to be worn on Saturday.  This is our fun family walk around the wetlands.  The more family that comes the merrier.  Fun games and activities will be held in our school garden afterwards.  We are in charge of the cool drink stall.  If you are able to help please put your name on the roster on our notice board.  Thank you!

Hello!
Hope you all had a fun filled weekend.
Please encourage children to unpack their own bags in the morning as well as to put their own bag in their locker. It makes things easier for them during the day. This way they know exactly where their belongings are and makes them a little bit independent☺ On Tuesday we celebrated Valentine's Day. The children looked lovely in their red, pink and white. Thank you to the parents for their beautiful cards. The children were very chuffed and I had to really hold back tears while reading them your special messages. We continue to discuss feelings. Please encourage children to bring books or posters relating to this theme. George(our class mascot ,he is a teddy) has started his adventures. He will be sent home with a different child every Friday for the weekend. We will be having our AGM on Tuesday 21st. It is important that at least one parent of each family attends. On Friday the 24th we will be having a Mad Hatters tea party. Children are to please wear "Mad" hats. Anything different, funny, creative etc. If you would like to make a contribution towards our tea party you may. Anything "tea partyish" will do. Tea, scones, biscuits etc.
Please check our notice board outside of our classroom as well as the children's message pockets. I have put up a "laundry roster" if you are able to do dolly corner laundry for us please fill your name in. We need 2 class reps for our class. If you are interested in fulfilling this duty please come and chat to me. We will be having our mini walk on Saturday 25th. Children are please to wear their black and white class t-shirt.  The Penguin class will be in charge of the Face painting. Please check our notice board for a roster as we will be needing parents to assist at this stall.
