CPD and other opportunities happening before Easter
- Fabulous phonics: Multi-Sensory approaches to teaching Phonics for children at Nursery level, also appropriate for SEND interventions – Monday 27 February, 9.30-3pm. Devised and led by SLE Ruth Moyler, this course will introduce a creative approach to teaching 'Letters & Sounds' Phases 1 & 2 (known as' Pre-Fab Phonics') and offers the opportunity to observe a teacher in action, learn a song, see the resources, have lunch, look at planning/experiencing related creative activities. - RULER: Improve the wellbeing of children and adults in your schools – Friday 3 March. RULER was created at Yale University and has now been launched with over 10,000 schools in the United States. Over the last 20 years research has shown that schools which have adopted RULER have helped prevent mental health disorders and negative behaviour, improved academic success, reduced anxiety and generally supported the well-being of children and adults within schools. Michael Eggleton, Deputy Headteacher at Charles Dickens School and one of our SLEs, has studied at Yale University in order to become a trainer of RULER. Through this one day course, you will have many of the skills to turn your own school into a RULER school. Sign up here.
- School Business Manager and Senior Admin Officer conference – Tuesday 14 March, 9.30am-4pm. Sign up here to join this conference – being organised by successful SBM and SLE, Steve Fontaine – which will enable SBMs and SAOs to hear from experts, network and plan for the financial year ahead. - FREE Teacher Taster at the Horniman Museum, Thursday 2nd March 2017 5:00pm – 6:30pm. Come along to the Horniman Museum and Gardens to an exclusive taster evening for teachers. Learn about school sessions, object handling and how to run a trip with your class. Also gain free entry into the adults only museum late (6:30pm – 9:30pm). This event is suitable for Primary, Secondary and SEN school teachers. To book your free place please email schools@horniman.ac.uk.
- Leading and Influencing Course, 13-15 March. Please see the flyer for details of this course which will give you the opportunity to practise seven tools of influencing and giving and receiving non-judgemental feedback. It comes very highly recommended from Liz Robinson and Nicola Noble of Surrey Square Primary School. Your opportunity to shape YOUR Southwark Teaching School Alliance – three dates for your diary
Please help us shape Southwark Teaching School Alliance to ensure it best meets the needs of our schools and learners. You are very welcome to join us, even if you haven't been involved before. The first meeting will be held on 15 March at 8am and James Robinson at Camelot has kindly offered to host. Please sign up here to let us know you're coming. There will be a further meeting on 28 June at 8am.
In addition, we will be holding a hot topic session on 26 April at 8am, where we will invite headteachers to get together to consider an issue of common concern. If you have any suggestions about what this session could cover, please get in touch. Current options include Ofsted from an inspector's perspective or exploring themes from Mime's analysis of Southwark data looking at how primary school children go on to perform at KS4 and KS5 (more information about this below).
Meet the SLEs (Specialist Leaders in Education)
SLEs are outstanding middle and senior leaders with at least two years' leadership experience. They each have at least one area of expertise and a successful track record of school improvement, demonstrated through an accreditation process overseen by the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
There are currently 13 SLEs within Southwark, most of whom have profiles detailing their expertise and experience on the Southwark Teaching School Alliance website. As well as leading courses, SLEs are available to carry out bespoke consultancy and support at a rate of £350 per day. Please contact Lara in the Southwark Teaching School Alliance office if you'd like support from an SLE for your school.

Primary heads: Ever wondered how well do your pupils do at secondary school?
Those of you who attended the Southwark Heads' meeting on 9 January will have seen Nicki Cooper from Mime present some analysis of how Southwark primary pupils go on to perform at KS4 and KS5. Mime have put together this short presentation describing the Southwark-level picture and explaining who to contact if you would like a report looking at the data specifically for your school.
Primary heads: Work with secondary heads on improving information sharing to support Y6-Y7 transition
Headteachers in the Southwark Association of Secondary Heads (SASH) have been considering what information they would find most useful to support the transition of children from Year 6 to Year 7. They are inviting primary heads to share their views and to consider how to make the transfer of information as smooth as possible. If you – or someone in your school – would like to be part of a focus group exploring these issues, please email me.
