How to Prepare Your Network for Ransomware

Whether you've heard of it or not, ransomware is a real concern, and it could render your entire network useless. The crooks behind ransomware attacks are playing a numbers game, spreading their traps and crippling businesses of all sizes. No one is immune from ransomware!

Once ransomware locks up your files, you can’t readily retrieve them without either paying the ransom or restoring them from an uninfected backup. Thus, the only defense against ransomware is a good offense. Use the tips below to prepare your network for ransomware.

Backup, Backup, Backup

We can’t stress this enough. If you have a good backup available, the bad guys will not have leverage over you. You may need to swap out some hardware, but at least you will have your data.

However, a simple backup may not be enough. What happens if the ransomware encrypts the contents of your backup drive? We recommend using a network attached storage (NAS) appliance that has its own unique user account settings, which locks everyone out except approved users.

Online backups are another viable option, but with a similar concern. If your online backup overwrites its copies of files with the now-encrypted files, you may be in a bind. If you intend to use an online backup service, make sure that it includes file version features that will allow you to restore previous versions of files.

Keep in mind, however, that restoring previous versions of individual files will likely be a tedious process — and your most current data may not be available.

It’s now more important than ever to have dedicated backup software. You may even want to periodically backup your backups, rotate backup media, and physically disconnect backup drives in between backups.

Network Security Software

In addition to backups, you’ll also want to make sure your network is protected against threats with a reliable network security system that protects against viruses, malware, phishing attacks, and other entry points commonly used to infect your systems with ransomware. As the saying goes, prevention is the best medicine. Learn more.

End User Education

Last but certainly not least, educate your users about the threat of ransomware, how it commonly arrives, and what to look out for. Should your first line of defense fail and allow a suspicious email to arrive, you can still foil the ransomware plot by not taking the bait.

Ransomware is a real threat to businesses of all sizes. If you can’t afford to lose your business data, you can’t afford not to beef up your defenses.
