February's Corporal Work of Mercy: Comfort the Sick

Lent

Lent begins this week. The school's Lenten Theme this year is "Our Journey with Jesus". Students will be completing a Do Something Positive journal and footprint. Teachers will be contacting you about how we can work together support your child on their Lenten journey.

Ways to Pray
#8  Turn every worry that drifts into your thoughts into a prayer of serenity.

Health Alert
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), Bureau of Immunization, has completed the administrative rules process to require meningococcal (A, C, W, Y) vaccine for students enrolling in 7th and 12th grades. The administrative rule change was effective January 11, 2017, and will be implemented at the beginning of the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. The immunization requirements chart from the Iowa Administrative Code, Chapter 7, Immunization and Immunization Education is available here.

The change requires a one-time dose of meningococcal (A, C, W, Y) vaccine received on or after 10 years of age for applicants in grades 7 and above, if born after September 15, 2004; and 2 doses of meningococcal (A, C, W, Y) vaccines for applicants in grade 12, if born after September 15, 1999; or 1 dose if received when applicants are 16 years of age or older.

Students of the Month
Please join me in congratulating Jameson Puffett and Nolan Reed for being chosen at January's Students of the Month.

Congratulations Archers
Congratulations St. John Archery Team! Last Saturday, Drew Crump finished in first place in the Middle School group and Katie Finnegan finished second in the Elementary group during the meet in Mt. Vernon. The SJS Elementary team finished second overall.

The entire Elementary school team as well as Tyler Davis, Zoey Ratchford, Drew Crump & Lauren Miller qualified for the state tournament in Des Moines on March 3 & 4.

Summer Camp & School
Just in case you are already planning for the summer. Our programs will run for five weeks from May 30 - June 29. Mrs. Hilliard has agreed to host a Summer Camp for 4 - 6 year olds; Mrs. Bussan will teach Math summer school and Mrs. Sitter will teach Reading summer school. More details will follow in April.

Pennies for Patients
Some fun and important dates to keep in mind for your child:

February 28th- March 3rd Grand Finale-Fill the Dollar Tree. Bring as many dollar bills as you and your family are comfortable with, and hang your dollar on the Gift of Life tree.

As always, thank you for your generosity and may God bless you and your family.

Busing Reminder
Tuesday, Feb. 28 is a full day of school for us, but a late start for the public schools, so you will have to arrange transportation in the morning. Buses will run their normal dismissal time that afternoon.

Please Help
Spring Fling is less than 6 weeks away. There is much to be done and we could use some more help. Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Mrs. Sheila Kruger, at volunteer@sjs.pvt.k12.ia.us to offer your assistance. There are things you can do to help from the comfort of your own home, and at your pace.

School Choice
The stars are aligned this year. Did you know that the Iowa Alliance for Choice in Education has been working with legislators for the past 10 years to pass an Education Savings Account bill? This year, we have more support from our State congress than ever before, but they still need our help. Therefore, I am asking you to visit their website, HERE, scroll down to “January Kickoff Webinar”.  While on the site, please also click on “United for Students” for a brief video and the “Take Action” area so you can receive legislative alerts.

Under the ESA plan, the state would deposit money into an Education Savings Account, and parents then use that money to cover educational costs such as nonpublic school tuition, home instruction, virtual courses, and tutors. The money the state would be spending on your child’s public education follows your student to your choice of education providers.
  • Parents would be free to choose from a variety of education services based on what they think would best meet their child’s learning needs.
  • Parents would receive a “debit card” which they would use at approved educational providers to cover their costs.
  • The value of an ESA would be all or some portion of the state per-pupil funding, which averages around $6,000 per student. The value of an ESA would be determined by the legislature.
  • Unused funds could be rolled over from year to year, and any funds remaining after high school graduation could be used toward tuition at an Iowa college or university.
