Meet SASHA Farm's Newest Residents

Dave Ramsey, an 8-year-old Jacob Ram found his forever home with us this January. Dave was being beaten up by the other rams at the Michigan petting zoo where he was living, but he's already fitting right in with the other sheep and goats at the Farm-- and Bhima the Gyr ox too.

Dave made a trip to see the vets at MSU in February to get a check up and is in good health despite coming to us underweight and with a damaged horn.

Adam (left), is an 8-year-old Pot-Bellied pig who came to us from the Humane Society of Huron Valley this month. Adam was found covered in insulation in an abandoned trailer in Ann Arbor by workers who were in the process of demolishing the structure. Adam had overgrown hooves and tusks. In fact, his tusks were so long and sharp that one was piercing his lip. Adam is now living with Eve (right in the photo) and we're hopeful they'll become fast friends.

We couldn't care for Dave, Adam and the other animals at the sanctuary without the generous help of our supporters. For more information about sponsoring Dave, Adam or another of our residents, please visit our website

SASHA Farm in the Community

SASHA Farm held its Valentine's Day fundraiser at The Lunch Room, an all-vegan restaurant, in Ann Arbor this month. Guests enjoyed a three-course vegan meal which included spring rolls, burger sliders, pasties, pasta, cake and more.

This month SASHA Farm Board President Bob Harvie gave a presentation about the sanctuary and some of our animal residents including Dave Ramsey (pictured above), Sheldon, Bhima, Laddie, and Norman to 50 people at an all-vegan potluck hosted by VegMichigan at the Humane Society of Huron Valley.
Volunteer Spotlight on Darcy Schreiner

Note to our readers: Volunteer Spotlights will become a regular feature in our future newsletters. The animals already know how great our volunteers are, but we want you to know them too!

What brought you to SASHA Farm Animal Sanctuary?

I've always done volunteer work (animal shelters, soup kitchens,) and my realtor who'd sold us our house mentioned there was an animal sanctuary less than 3 miles away. Kismet!

What has been your most meaningful experience at the Sanctuary?

I've had several meaningful experiences. What sticks in my mind are feelings more than specific experiences. There's nothing like caring for a baby animal and thinking, wow, this creature knows nothing but the primal impulses-hunger, fear, safety, love. And they give a surprising amount of love back. It is so saddening that more people don't see this. If they did, there would be more vegans! I also remember the heartbreaking moments of having to say goodbye to many of the animals in the decade I've been here. That never gets easier.

Do you have a favorite animal on the Farm? If so, who and why?

I'm an equal opportunity lover. Any animal that wants and gives sugar is a favorite to me! Dharma, Mindy, and one of the hens I nicknamed Sweet Pea were/are some favorites, as well as the 3 special needs goats I call Prozac, Xanax, and Valium.

When did you first develop a connection to animals or animal rights?

I was about 2. My family visited a wildlife rescue, and I snuggled with a fawn. I became a highly self-righteous, indignant, vocal vegan and environmentalist in high school. I've matured since then in my methods of responding to opposition, and I'm much more diplomatic and tactful, but the message is still there.

What is your favorite vegan dish?

Anything Indian or Thai when I go out. At home I make a killer taco and spaghetti sauce, if I may say so myself. My kids love them, and let's be honest, kids are a hard sell!

What do you like to do when you're not volunteering at the Farm?

Well, my 3 small kids take up a lot of that. With them I wrestle in the bouncy house. It's a good workout, and we have fun. (I'm all about multi-tasking.) I also have 4 dogs and 5 cats, so my motherly duties are endless.  But when I can, I pick up the guitar and belt out a few. The kids rarely let me play more than 1-dong before they derail the efforts by commandeering the strumming or twisting the tuning pegs, but they like it when I sing. I've been going to the acoustic open mic nights that started up this winter at the Village Tap; that's been good incentive to keep honing, writing, and learning new songs. I just wish I had half of my kids' energy (human or goat!).
