Panel Discussion -
Women in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM)
Thursday 2 March, 7.00 - 9.00pm, Events Central, City Library, George Street Entrance
We are starting 2017 strongly, with a panel discussion meeting jointly hosted by members of the Zonta Club of Manawatu and ourselves. While we have been discussing a panel such as this for some time, the impetus for enlarging the scope of this discussion to include a wider audience was the statement made at the end of last year suggesting that women’s ability to contribute as serious scientists was compromised by their gender. The recent huge marches around the world of women demanding equal rights as a reaction to the inauguration of Donald Trump also have relevance. The discussion will not be targeted overtly towards addressing gender stereotypes but this may emerge.
The panel will be chaired by Dr Nicola Schreurs, who is an active member of both organisations. Nicola is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Nutrition and Meat Science at the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences. The panelists comprise a mix of women in STEM careers in the community as well as from the College of Sciences at Massey University.
Community:
Anna Brookie – HoD Mathematics, Palmerston North Girls’ High School
Catherine Lloyd-West – Applied Statistician working across all science groups at AgResearch
Dr Lorna Johnson – Veterinarian, Councillor Palmerston North City Council
Dr Rachel Keedwell – Ecologist, Councillor Horizons Regional Council
Massey University College of Sciences:
Dr Anne Ridler – Associate Professor of Sheep & Beef Cattle Health & Production, Institute of Veterinary, Agricultural & Biomedical Sciences
Dr Catherine McCartin – Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, School of Engineering and Advanced Technology
Dr Jane Goodyer – Associate Professor of Manufacturing Systems Design, School of Engineering and Advanced Technology
Dr Marlena Kruger – Professor of Nutritional Physiology, Institute of Food Science & Technology
As well as inviting our own members and members of the general public to attend, we have also invited students from secondary schools in order to provide valuable input for their career decision making.
We look forward to seeing you there. Tea and coffee will be available after the panel discussion to enable further conversation with individual panelists.
Saturday 11 March 12 noon - Foxton Visit - pot luck lunch and walk
Gretta is inviting GWM members and their partners and families plus Friendship Bridge members to come for a pleasant day out on Saturday 11 March. We hope to make the most of the warm weather and have a relaxed social occasion.
Gretta has a family beach house directly in front of the Foxton Beach estuary (10 Rosvall Place, Foxton Beach). The house & front deck is a good place for viewing the Manawatu River mouth/Tasman Sea, looking for godwits, royal spoonbills etc, and just relaxing. Those who are energetic can walk to the wharf, go fishing, play petanque, walk around the river mouth or visit the Ocean Beach and perhaps go swimming.
If there is sufficient interest we will proceed to organise carpools. We would like everyone to bring your lunch or a plate to share. Tea, coffee, milk, plates and cutlery etc. will be provided. Please contact Gretta on millsnz@gmail or cell 027 230 6400 to indicate your interest and offer of transport to assist an overseas PhD student to attend. Details will be finalised after Monday 6 March.
