Dear Parents and Caregivers

Peter Ackers
The school year is well and truly underway and students and teachers have settled into the routines of school.

The Camps were a great way to start the year and on the camp week we had Year 7 & 8 students at Tangihua Lodge and Year 9 students and Year 11 Duke of Edinburgh Camp on Urupukapuka Island in the Bay of Islands. The Year 13 students accompanied both camps and they worked really well with the younger students and developed bonds and their leadership skills.

Camps are an integral part of what we do at Huanui College and some of the benefits of camps are as follows:

Children develop their social skills - Most activities at camp involve team work, which is great to strengthen established friendships and also to develop new friendships by connecting with children they don’t regularly talk with at school. Through activities, children develop supportive relationships not only with different children, but also with their teachers. At camp, children have the opportunity to learn about acceptance, caring and understanding.

Development of independence skills - For many children school camp is their first time away from family and home for a few nights. This is a great opportunity for kids to grow up by learning how take care of themselves and to do things on their own. Most kids do rise to the challenge and learn to rely on themselves when they spend time away from home.

Development of decision-making skills - Supervising teachers are not able to hover over each child all the time, so at camp, children are responsible for making more of their own choices.

Increase environmental awareness - Children become more aware of the environment, develop outdoor skills and an appreciation for nature.

Learn new skills – Children will be exposed to a range of activities that they may not have tried before. When away from their parents, children are often more adventurous and willing to try new things.

Both camps delivered these benefits and more to our children and thanks should go to the teachers and parents that went to camp and special recognition of the hard work that Mr Towey, Mr Dodd and Ms Cebalo did in organising and running the Camps.

Back at School our Year 12 students completed their peer mentor training day and Ms Evans is really impressed with the leadership that is developing in this year’s Year 12 students.

Students have adjusted well to the new form classes and times and if you have any queries about your child either academically or socially, your child’s form teacher should be the first point of contact.

The junior school is taking shape and the positive education classes have been going well with students taking part in the activities with enthusiasm. Each week we focus on a different aspect of positive education and this week it is “Enthusiasm”.

The school year has started positively and it is great to see so many students enjoying their time at school.

Rarotonga Trip

Some kind words from Cole Rudolph who accompanied our Year 9 2016 students to Rarotonga at the end of last year (and whose medical expertise came in very handy!):

“It has been wonderful meeting all of your lovely children. I kept saying to mum throughout the trip what an awesome bunch of kids you have. It wasn’t quite the holiday I was expecting as there was a lot of work behind the scenes however I got to make a lot of new friends and had a great experience! I am sad to be leaving everyone and part of me wishes I was a teacher at the school, however I’ll leave that to the experts! And can I say all the teachers put so much into this trip to make it enjoyable for the kids that they definitely deserve the praise. My mum Brenda Rudolph really has done such an exceptional job, and I’m very lucky to have this super woman as my mum. Cheers, 'Brother Cole'.

Year 7 and 8 Camp

What a week! We had a fabulous time out at the Tangihua Lions Lodge with the year 7 and 8 students, and all activities were run by the Year 13s and Prefects. It was a very busy time between climbing around the confidence course, chasing others in Animal Survival, and learning how to use a compass in orienteering and having a look at the different habitats in the bush. We also had heaps of fun night games with a 10 task challenge on the first night which included a good game of fluffy bunnies and the Weetbix challenge, a Burma trail on the second night and a fantastic performance of group skits on the last night.

A huge thank you to the Year 13 students who ran the camp, activities, groups and generally hung out with the junior students. They did an absolutely amazing job and made me very proud to be a teacher at Huanui College. The skills they gained at camp will be invaluable throughout their senior year and they have made some unforgettable memories for little Year 7 and 8 students. Thank you to the parents who came and helped – whether it be fixing the kitchen, chopping a million potatoes or participating in the parent/teacher skit. We also couldn’t have done it without the parents who also supported us from home and let us have their children for 4 days (when they had just started a new school!). A big thank you to Dave Blackley for helping us out with the meat and Huanui Orchards for the fruit as well – top quality and super nutritious for our kids! And lastly a big thank you to all the staff and teachers who helped bring it all together – both at camp and holding the fort back at school.

Leadership Training Day

On the 8th of February the Year 12s participated in a Leadership Training Day which was run by Ms. Evans. We looked at setting targets, our future prospects and what we need to do to get there. Leadership was a strong topic, with much talk about potential and what qualities make a good leader. Discussions were had around world leaders and how they role model their leadership skills. Donald Trump was one we all could have talked about for hours.

We also looked at the Peer Mentorship program at Huanui College and why it is so important. Ms. Evans talked to us about what is expected from a Peer Mentor and the changes to this year's program. As part of the training we played a lot of fun games which helped people learn more about each other. Everyone really enjoyed the day and overall an inspiring and motivating day with many good lessons to learn from.

Year 9 Camp - Year 11 DOE- Urapukapuka Island

My name is Elin and I am an exchange student from Switzerland. In my first two weeks at Huanui my friend Julia and I got invited to the Duke of Edinburgh practice camp of the year 11's. As we don't have this event back home we had no Idea what to expect but it turned out to be lots of fun. Our favourite activities included kayaking to the island, then when we arrived, paddle boarding, sea biscuiting and jumping off the roof of the amazing huge catamaran. The thing we enjoyed the most was the night kayaking. The fact that the weather wasn't that great made it even more exiting. Looking back I`m really thankful for getting to join all of you on this trip and am looking forward to doing lots of more fun things with you in the future. [...View more images from this trip]
Thanks for everything! - Elin

Mayor Welcomes International Students

Our International Students, along with other students in the district, were invited to a special ceremony at the Council Chambers by Mayor Sheryl Mai.

"The students bring a vibrancy and diversity to our community which we love sharing. New Zealanders are known for their hospitality, and as a city we are proud to welcome people from all over the world." - Mayor Sheryl Mai.

The students were presented with a welcome certificate and enjoyed meeting up with international students from other countries.

Huanui College students have been invited to be ushers again this year (help people carry things to the venue, direct guests where to park and generally help out). Students to see Ashley Cebalo about being part of the community service team if they are interested or email Ashlee Cebalo.
