Quote of the Week:

“The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it.” ― David Orr, Ecological Literacy

Now is an 'opportunity to re-secure' valuable heritage and a community asset - connecting people to our history, our stories, contributing to a sense of place, community identity and belonging.

Dulong School Road & Unsealed Roads Upgrade Plan

At the Mapleton & Districts Community Association (MADCA) meeting on Wednesday 1 February 2017, report from Cr Greg Rogerson, information was shared about maintenance of unsealed roads in the shire.

The council has 4 graders and hundreds of kilometres of unsealed roads to maintain.
The length of time between maintenance is dependent on the weather.
"'[E]verything's going well, ok ... but blows out if there's wet weather' Cr Rogerson said.

Cr Rogerson drew our attention to the Low Order Unsealed Roads Upgrade Plan which was adopted by the Sunshine Coast Council on 28 February 2015.

Unsealed roads are often seen as unacceptable, due to concerns such as dust nuisance, corrugations, loose material, environmental issues and safety. There is also a perception that unsealed roads are more expensive to maintain as the surface needs regular ongoing maintenance.

The Plan recognises these expectations and provides a process for determining the highest priority unsealed roads for upgrading, as well as a 20 year upgrade plan.

An option to speed up the process of sealing lower order unsealed roads is a co-funding arrangement in consultation with residents.  Refer to the Plan and diagram below.
The next Mapleton Bowls Club Community Dinner is Friday 24 February 2017 at 6.00pm.

How to keep your smartphone from becoming a barrier to human connections

Robert Waldinger, a professor who has spent decades studying how to be happy.

"What keeps them happy, none of it was about wealth, none about fame, nothing about work," Waldinger said, during a talk at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Saturday.

"Close relationships were the best predictor of what would keep people happy and healthy throughout their lives," he said. "The idea that relationships would keep us happy is not a surprise … what was a surprise was that close relationships actually predicted peoples' health."

However, the rise of technology like smartphones poses a challenge because of the way it can be a distraction for those using it, and becomes a barrier to human connections.

So what's the best way to counter the effects of technology and be happy? Waldinger offered some nuggets of wisdom ...
