New markers for wheat and barley

Wheat: tan spot on 2A

AWBMMP-GA mapped a QTL for tan spot (yellow leaf spot resistance) on chromosome 2A in several mapping populations. Now, we have identified a closely linked SNP marker that is polymorphic in all of these populations and that distinguishes the resistance sources (Magenta, H45 and Wyalkatchem)  from many other wheat lines.

Barley: distinguishing the Eth-295 mlo-11 variant from standard mlo-11

AWBMMP-GA has developed a marker for  mlo-11(cnv2), a novel variant of the mlo-11 allele for resistance against powdery mildew,, The mlo-11(cnv2) variant , which is carried by Eth-295, is of particular interest because it lacks the negative pleiotropic effects that are normally associated with mlo resistance. Many thanks to Simon Ellwood of Curtin University for providing sequence data and DNA.

Marker meetings on 9 and 21 March

The AWBMMP-GA Wheat and Barley Steering Committees will meet soon in Adelaide. The purpose of these meetings is to review project progress and to seek advice from the members of the steering committees. Both meetings will be held in the Seminar Room of the Plant Genomics Centre on Hartley Grove, Urrbrae. The Plant Genomics Centre is building 22 on the map of the Waite Campus.

The meetings are open to any observers who wish to attend. We also welcome your suggestions of traits, parents, populations and/or loci for which AWBMMP-GA can help advance wheat, durum or barley breeding via the development of molecular markers. Please send your suggestions to Diane Mather (diane.mather@adelaide.edu.au) .
