Applications open on 15 March, 2017

On 15 March, 2017, ERIGrid will open the 2nd call for free Transnational Access.

If you are looking for sophisticated smart grid infrastructure with top know-how and innovative installations for conducting your own experimental research, then ERIGrid offers an invaluable opportunity for you.

Users from research, academia and industry are invited to apply for free access to Europe's top smart grids research laboratories of ERIGrid partners.

The ERIGrid project provides validation, testing and simulation facilities free of charge for your experimental research, backed by concentrated know-how and best practices in the field of smart grid systems and distributed energy resources.

The expenses, including travel and accommodation, will be reimbursed, subject to ERIGrid rules and regulations.

New Smart Grid Laboratory of SINTEF
Available for Free Access in ERIGrid
Jointly operated by SINTEF and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the new Smart Grid Laboratory in Trondheim (NO) was opened in late 2016.

The laboratory is system-oriented and provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for R&D, demonstration, verification and testing over a wide range of smart grid use cases.

A specific feature of the laboratory is the opportunity to integrate real-time simulations and physical power system assets (hardware-in-the-loop) with ratings up to 200 kVA, 400 V AC or 700 V DC.

Laboratory use comprises the following areas:

  • Smart home
  • Management system
  • Multi-terminal HVDC grid connecting offshore wind farms
  • Frequency support from wind turbines
  • Product testing and verification
  • Microgrid
  • 200 kVA Power Hardware in the Loop (PHIL)
  • Example of physical power system setup

Along with smart grid infrastructures of other ERIGrid partners, this facility of SINTEF is provided free of charge for experimental research of applicants from academia, research and industry within the ERIGrid Transnational Access.

ERIGrid Publishes Open Access:
Laboratory Education of Modern Power Systems
Using PHIL Simulation
In December 2016, the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems published the paper “Laboratory Education of Modern Power Systems using PHIL Simulation” by P. Kotsampopoulos, V. Kleftakis, N. Hatziargyriou of Smart Grids Research Unit, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Technical University of Athens.

Published by ERIGrid as open access, the paper exemplifies the first-time systematic use of Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) simulation for laboratory education. Laboratory exercises have been designed on the four selected topics crucial for the understanding of power system operation. These topics focus on the effects of increased integration of Distributed Generation (DG).

The paper supports ERIGrid’s goals to improve real-time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) methods and to carry out education of professionals in power systems and ICT.
