THEY ARE AMONG US

We watched a movie a few days ago at home that was a "holiday leftover" - a Christmas movie I had never seen before.  Instead of the usual rather sappy story line with poor acting, this one actually interested me, albeit with a few inappropriate words.  It was the story of an extended family, all making their way from near and far, home for Christmas and the annual traditions and dinner it always included.

This family was like most - a string of somewhat dysfunctional people all carrying various amounts of baggage, but very reticent to admit or expose all of that to each other.  So every year they "play the game" at Christmas: put on the best face, keep the facade in place, try and convince everyone you're really doing well when you're not.  In fact, many of them were in desperate situations.

The story goes both humorous and terribly sad, as the various lives are exposed for what they really are, and the rather positive and unexpected ending brought tears to my eyes.  I turned to my wife and said: "They're all around us - they're among us - people in all kinds of messes, trying to put on a good face."  It seemed a bit overwhelming at that moment.

We say around here at NFCN "You can find a family here."  What really is family?  Is it a safe place?  Is it an honest place?  Can  you be "real" when you're hurting, transparent when you're frustrated and vulnerable when you need someone to love you?  Can you risk dropping the artificial image and show who you really are?

Amongst our congregations there are people with baggage, questions and pain.  People coming in and out of our ministries that desperately need a church family like ours.  Those who are seeking God with open but bruised hearts, needing God to be God in their lives.  Can we be their family in the truly spiritual way they need us to be?

God help us to be in these days, for each other, and those He will send us if He can trust us with them!  They are among us, and they are coming.

A Man and His Design
What has happened to biblical manhood
in the 21st century?  Our culture and
family environments have not always taught us how to become a man of God.

If you desire to hear from other men
about how God is helping them overcome places of temptation and weakness
to become the man of God in their
marriage, parenting, workplace and friendships, then the 33 Series is for you.
March 15 – April 19,  6-7pm.
Facilitated by Pastor Don Diehl.
