WASHINGTON WILD NEWS

WA Wild 19U A Rep Highlighted in USA Hockey National Continuous Game

On February 17-19, 2017, the International Ice Hockey Federation will host the 2017 Girls' Global Game. The Girls' Global Game is a worldwide initiative where forty-four federations will host one-hour games to be held in succession across the world. In conjunction with this event, USA Hockey will highlight girls’ games at varying age levels across the United States on February 18 and 19, for one 'continuous' game. A complete listing of games and further information on both events is available
here.

Please note that all game times are listed as Eastern Time and actual game times may not be exact (i.e. the 5:00 PM game slot may reflect an actual game at 5:15PM).

The Washington Wild 19U A team has been selected as part of the 2017 USA Hockey National Continuous Game. They meet Tri Cities in PCAHA play offs this Friday in Port Coquitlam, B.C. at 8:15pm PST. The Wild game follows North Dakota State vs. Ohio State being played in Grand Forks, ND, and precedes Northern California Women’s Hockey League game occurring in Fremont, CA. The Wild game will be played concurrently with a game across the Pacific in Japan.

We ask parents, players and fans to use social media with pictures and video to call attention pre-game, in-game and post-game, and also give a shout-out to the teams that are playing after the Washington Wild game - Northern California Women's Hockey League.  Please use #girlshockey when you use social media.

Planning for Winter and Spring Break College Visits

By Kiersten Murphy - Kiersten Murphy is the Executive Director of Murphy College Consultants and advises WWFHA and its members as a pro-staffer in the college admissions process.

Now is a fantastic time for juniors (and sophomores and freshmen—it’s never too early!) to be forward thinking, and incorporate some college visits into tournament trips and winter and spring breaks, even if they’re just quick visits to assess what style, size and location. The biggest hurdle for students is identifying which colleges to visit to make it a worthwhile endeavor, as college trips can be pricey, and let's face it, exhausting. That is where working with an independent college counselor comes into play - developing a list of colleges for you to visit and explore is my specialty. But not everyone is able to work with an independent college counselor, so where should you begin?

Depending on the time of the year, you may approach it differently. February break can be used to investigate different types of colleges nearby if you have yet to see any at all. If you are shooting for April, you should be targeted in what you see, as your college list should be developed by this point, and it should be balanced between those schools that are more of reaches to those that are more possible.

The Experts’ Edge: No Need to Rush Kids’ Development

“Shouldn’t my 8-year-old play a few full-ice games at the end of the season to prepare for 10U hockey?”

It’s a question rooted – knowingly or not – in a rushed development philosophy.

The reality is, 8U hockey prepares players for 10U, where they learn what they’ll need to ascend to 12U, and so on, growing at each step toward their full long-term potential. Each step is valuable. Each is a building block.

Ask WWFHA

Q
: We’re five months into the season and my children aren’t playing any better than they did in October. What’s wrong?

A:  As adults, we become conditioned to expect dramatic performance gains quickly and steadily in our everyday lives. But remember,
children’s development isn’t linear. They don’t have adult maturity, physically or mentally, and they don’t have the broad foundation of experiences adults have to help them adjust quickly to a wide variety of challenges. So, before jumping to any conclusions about 10U children on the ice, keep in mind that their minds and bodies are in a constant state of change, and that it’s normal for their performance to plateau or even regress for periods of time. If they are still having fun, still engaged and still giving a great effort, they’re still improving, even if it doesn’t always look like it at 10U.
