i-Tree Training is Coming to Australia!
Reflecting growing international interest in i-Tree, a new i-Tree Masterclass will tour Australia next month. The i-Tree team, in cooperation with Seed Consulting services, will conduct the two day course in Adelaide, Perth, and Sydney. We will cover all the methods of conducting large citywide i-Tree Eco projects. We will also highlight how smaller pilot projects and i-Tree Canopy can be used to quickly communicate the benefits and value of urban trees. The Masterclass will facilitate discussion around how best to put the tools to work in education and advocacy by making the business case for trees.

Participation in this training will provide participants with 12 credits toward maintaining their International Society of Arboriculture credentials.

Casey Trees and Citizen Scientists Assess the Benefits of Trees in D.C.'s Iconic Landscapes

Casey Trees plays a vital role in ensuring park visitors, from all parts of the globe, enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience exploring tree benefits in iconic parks of Washington D.C. Casey staff and volunteers conducted an inventory of 9,290 trees across several Washington D.C. parks stretching from iconic locations of the Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt memorials to the hidden local treasures of Lincoln Park and Haines Point. The inventory was then imported into i-Tree Eco so that the tree benefits could be integrated into a new interactive park inventory map providing visitors and The National Park Service with a more comprehensive understanding of the historic trees and landscapes.

Seeing the Campus For the Trees

Students in the Urban Forestry program at Kent State University in Ohio conducted a campus tree inventory using i-Tree as part of a service-learning course launched in connection to the expansion of their Tree Campus USA designation through the Arbor Day Foundation. Focusing on the study of trees in the urban environment and the maintenance of an urban campus forest, the students used i-Tree Streets, Eco, and Hydro to determine the benefits the trees provide. Since 2013, students have continued to collect data on more than 550 trees, and this information is utilized by the campus to develop comprehensive strategies for the care and maintenance of their urban forest.

Learn How to Collect Eco Data With Your Mobile Device in 15 Minutes
i-Tree Eco now offers users in the US and abroad flexible project options to quickly estimate tree benefits. One of these options includes the mobile data collection system, which can be used to collect field data whether working in parks, campuses or cities. In a new four part video series, the process of using the mobile data collector for i-Tree Eco inventory and sample plot based projects is described. The topics include the following:
  • Submitting a project to the mobile data collector
  • Collecting and entering data
  • Retrieving collected field data into your Eco project
  • Mobile data collection project management tips

Connect With i-Tree Team Members During Upcoming Webinars
The next monthly i-Tree instructional webinar will feature success stories related to using i-Tree in the community. The free series is offered by the Urban Natural Resources Institute (UNRI) and will be led by members of the i-Tree Team. The sessions typically feature demonstrations, presentations and discussion designed to help participants become familiar with the i-Tree tools and provide a foundation for further learning.
 
Pre-registration is required to participate.

  • March (TBA) - Using i-Tree to Assess Community Parks (tentative)
