Faith in the
Public Square

Many of you have expressed interest in such a group seeking to articulate our values based in the person and purpose of Jesus Christ. Monte is proposing two possibIlities for starting such a group: The annual Fat Tuesday Pancake Dinner (2/28) and the National Day of Unplugging (3/3-4).
Read more about the ideas, and leave comments on the post on our blog [LINK HERE] or talk to Monte on Sunday or contact him via email if you're interested.
One concrete idea is to set up a table at the Rockridge BART Station on Monday, February 27th during rush hour from 5-7pm to engage with people about the National Day of Unplugging, encouraging them to digitally disconnect in order to reconnect relationally.
You can help make these events not only happen but be meaningful and transformational in our city.

EVENTS AT LOCAL SISTER CHURCHES

Our sister Church, Primera Iglesia Presibteriana Hispana is finally back, worshipping in their Sanctuary after a long journey of ups and downs. Several months ago structural damage was found that threatened the possibility of the sanctuary ceiling collapsing! Painstakingly renovated and now open for public use again they are inviting us - and others - to celebrate and give thanks to God with them at a Special Service. Sunday, February 19th at 4:00pm, to be following by a dinner.
We're asked to confirm our participation no later than Monday, Feb 13, 2017 510-533-4321 or at irmahernandez777@yahoo.com to help with the head count for food.
PIPH is located at:
1941 High Street, Oakland, 94601

The votes are in! Our next book club book is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. It's a deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” as he creates a story of a blind French girl and a German soldier in the world of World War 2. Read more... (be careful of spoilers!)
Our next book club meeting is on Tuesday, March 7th from 12-1pm.
The book won the Pulitzer Prize and is easily found at local libraries, although there may be a waitlist.

Men's Breakfast
Saturday, February 25th at 8:30am
We're re-scheduling our monthly breakfast gathering for the 4th Saturday, February 25th. (We'll keep to our 3rd Saturday/mo. scheduling for our March 18th gathering.) As always, we'll be serving breakfast at 8:30 a.m., with reflections from Psalm 103 led by Pstr. Bob Bevier, followed by our Catch-Up Sharing time coupled with introduction of guests or new participants, followed by a Good Word from Pstr. Monte if present. A simple format, but powerful in our effort to know and support each other at a meaningful level. I really look forward to learning how everyone's doing. As we all know, we can't support one another if we don't know one another. Simple algebra. Also, do feel free to invite others who might enjoy the fellowship.
In order to help me in preparing adequately let me know if you're planning to attend or not. Thanks much for that input. Also, it's been so great the help offered by those who have come early to assist in the preparations (i.e., Richard Harvey, and others)!

Celebrate Fat Tuesday (aka Mardi Gras)
Family Friendly Pancake Dinner
Tuesday, February 28th starting at 6pm
Fat Tuesday marks the beginning of Lent, the 6 week season leading up to Easter, a time of spiritual renewal and discipline intended to center us around the radically life-changing love of Christ Jesus.
Join us at 6pm for our traditional pancake dinner. Bring a skillet to play traditional pancake games!
This year we're also providing educational opportunities about concrete ways to help local immigrants and refugees. Donations accepted to benefit Oakland neighbors in need of assistance. This event is open to all and a great way to discover our CAPC community.
