All Beings Confluence

Artist Martha Cole considers this “the most important project of my artistic life. It has changed and I have changed.”

All Beings Confluence is a thoughtful community-based art project grounded in social activism and creating connections. The full installation consists of over 300 fabric panels made by hundreds of individuals. It has been experienced in various forms by over 12,000 people around the world! This iteration of the project is opening in Saskatoon at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery on February 25, 2017.

The project first emerged through the collaborative efforts of four prairie women – Shannon Carson, Martha Cole, Madeline Lepage, and Fenella Temmerman. All Beings Confluence consists of long sheer panels, each representing a single living Being – a tree, bird, person, insect, even an alga – all part of the world we live in. Each panel represents, for the person who made it, an experience or a story. No single panel is ever seen by itself; it is always in communication with others, with the people walking through the space. Everyone is invited to move among these Beings and have a direct physical experience with the project – recognizing our part in the complex and interconnected whole of our world.

All Beings Confluence was originally inspired by a song by Carolyn McDade, composer, social activist, and environmentalist. In the song, the question is asked, “What do we remember here otherwise forgotten? What do we remember that we must ne’er forget?” The concise answer is “Wholeness.”

All Beings Confluence, which began in 2010, continues to grow through workshops held by textile artist and “steward” of the project, Martha Cole. Martha is running a workshop at the Unitarian Centre of Saskatoon from March 29th to April 1st.
