One year since the release of their Southern Lord-released Tierra Y Libertad LP, XIBALBA returns with three monstrous new acts of vengeance on Diablo, Con Amor.. Adios., the EP delivering the gritty, downtuned, metallic hardcore grooves the band’s followers have come to expect from the quartet over the past seven years. As with their prior titles, Diablo, Con Amor... Adios was recorded at The Pit Recording Studio with longtime cohort Taylor Young (Nails, Twitching Tongues, Disgrace) and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Integrity, Nails, Harm’s Way), XIBABLA also once again secured artwork from Dan Seagrave (Dismember, Entombed, Suffocation) to visually depict the wrath of these three relentless tracks.

Aptly self-labelled as "possessed punk", the sound of SATAN translates into a crude, glacial approach that nails both extreme punk and second-wave black metal vibes. Founded in 2009 in Grenoble, France, the band has since released several splits as well as one full-length, 2015's "L'Odeur Du Sang". 

Mixed and mastered by Today Is The Day's mastermind Steve Austin, their punishing second album "Un Deuil Indien" (An Indian Mourning) is another departure from the band's previous works. While still going straight to the point - barely clocking at 17 minutes - with blizzard-like riffs and drumming, the pared-down production shows SATAN at its rawest form. A feeling reinforced by the vicious, more articulated vocal delivery, highlighting absinthe-fueled, surrealist proses. Corrosive yet surprisingly anthemic, minimalist yet deep in sound and meaning, "Un Deuil Indien" is a record built on contrasts behind its apparent frightening savagery.

Give's Electric Flower Cult 12" (Lockin Out) was recorded during the same sessions that bore the fruit of their last two releases: Sonic Bloom E.P. (revelation), and the self released Electric Flower Circus album. It comes as no surprise then, that Electric Flower Cult brings the same synthesis of the raw emotion and social conscience of DC's Revolution Summer era, and the shimmering layers of the early 90's Creation roster. Electric Flower Cult delivers 4, as yet unheard songs into the Give repertoire as well as a newly mastered version of the song Electric Flower Cult, each serving as part of an aggregate reminder of the snaking complexity and cathartic highs that Give have made their stock in trade for 8 years running. The Electric Flower Cult 12" hereby signals the end of Give's Electric Flower cycle, but it undoubtably reminds the listener of all the things that made it special.

SAM SKINNER "Danny Through Junior"

Usually, it’s an album’s lyrics that are praised for its poetry. But there’s also something about the instruments and melodies on Sam Skinner’s solo debut Danny Through Junior that feels equally poetic. Take a song like “Chestnuts,” on which Skinner’s shy voice is bolstered by a higher harmony, but also a tenderly plucked guitar whose expressive voice almost overpowers the vocalists. The way this guitar guides the song, the way a tidy drum set keeps it contained and a banjo trundles delicately behind it, evokes the savvy of a Whitman poem, the whimsy of a Dickinson. Or even “Joel,” like a whispered Weezer song, uses mumbly chords and a clever melody as it cycles through its verses. These songs feature musicianship that possess a sort of lyrical quality, delicate and intentional, instilling the implicit sense of a story, showing more than it tells. Skinner tapped a number of up-and-coming contemporaries to contribute vocals, including Elaiza Santos from Crying and 100%, Natasha Jacobs from Thelma, and Evan Stephens Hall, with whom he plays in Pinegrove. But, on Danny Through Junior, he takes a much calmer, much quieter approach compared to this other project, and it’s this calm that makes the record feel so pastoral—picturesque, but also poetic, full of complexity and delicate detail. It’s also this calm that make Skinner’s debut exciting within its indie context; here’s a musician stretching his wings and applying his agile songwriting sensibility to another sound, expanding his capacity as a musician and, simultaneously, the potential of his genre. -Dane Erbach

From the remains of seminal New Jersey straight edge bands Turning Point, Floorpunch and Mouthpiece comes the five-piece unit known as Search. Much like the bands from which they spawned, Search kicks out a classic style of East Coast hardcore that's lean, mean and created to elicit the type of sing-alongs and stage dives you would have expected to witness on Sunday afternoons of yesteryear. While the six songs of their debut 7", "Between The Lines," are a testament to a specific style and sound of hardcore, Search most definitely exists in the here and now with a timeless message that is still as relevant and important today as it was when the members themselves discovered it in their teens. After the release of the critically acclaimed De Doden Hebben het Goed, Wiegedood didn’t exactly lay it low. Not only did the band tour Europe extensively, they also got together to compose their follow-up album De Doden Hebben het Goed II whilst being in the flow of playing together for numerous nights in a row. The organic feeling of playing the music live certainly found its way into the sound of the band. You can expect everything that was brilliant about the debut album, but more concise, compact, and precise. Over a relative short span of time, Wiegedood certainly developed a sound of its own within the atmospheric black metal lexicon. This sound is extended to the second installment of De Doden Hebben het Goed, but with a fresh and urgent ferociousness added to the mix. February will spawn a monster album. And that’s a promise.
