'EDUCATION ON THE FRONT LINE'

An inspiring story about how a university president and Rotary Club have worked together to fight Boko Haram.

In her office at the American University of Nigeria, in the dusty northeastern town of Yola, Margee Ensign heard the news: Some 170 miles to the north, nearly 300 girls at a boarding school had been roused from sleep and kidnapped at gunpoint by the terrorist group Boko Haram.

Ensign, the president of the fledgling university, was already struggling with the fallout from Boko Haram’s attacks in Nigeria’s north, which had sent a flood of refugees into Yola. Together with community leaders, including her fellow Rotarian's, she had worked to run feeding programs to keep the refugees – whose number eventually swelled to 400,000 – alive.

'PHILIPPINES WARNED TO PREPARE FOR THE BIG ONE'
MANILA, Philippines - Residents of Metro Manila and nearby provinces should prepare for the “Big One,” a magnitude 7.2 earthquake to be generated by the West Valley Fault, which State seismologists have repeatedly warned the public that the West Valley Fault is ripe for movement.

Amid the devastation caused by the magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Surigao, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) yesterday appealed to residents of Metro Manila and nearby provinces to prepare for a powerful earthquake that could kill thousands.

“Everyone must learn from the recent effects of the magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Surigao del Norte. If a similar event happens in a highly urbanized area, the effects can be more devastating,” Phivolcs director Renato Solidum warned.

'SHELTERBOX & ROTARY: MAKING A DIFFERENCE'
What a difference a hat and coat makes in the heart of winter! These kids are wearing coats supplied by ShelterBox and distributed in Aleppo by the Kiwi charity ReliefAid .

The fighting in and around Aleppo that has been broadcast in recent weeks is indicative of the intolerable position that people are in throughout Syria.

Thanks to the support of our generous supporters, we have been able to support people as they are evacuated from the city with items such as clothing and bedding items to shelter them from the cold winter conditions. This would not be possible without the presence of our partners Hand in Hand for Syria يدا بيد لنبني سوريا and ReliefAid, whose staff share the same fatal risks as the people they are trying to help.

'FEELING THE WINTER CHILL?'

ShelterBox are sending safer heaters into northern Syria as displaced families are desperate to keep warm.

Some families are huddling in draughty single-room shelters constructed from concrete with tin roofs, with no source of heating and no windows. Others are living under canvas. So, the temptation is to improvise, to burn wood, or to make basic heaters out of tin cans, with naked flames and noxious fumes. The dangers are obvious, and spontaneous fires are frequent in this daily battle against the cold.

To minimise fire-related tragedies while warming young hands, we've been working with Hand in Hand for Syria to distribute 1,000 high-spec kerosene heaters to families in Idlib Governorate.

'SHELTERBOX: SHINING A LIGHT FOR THOSE IN NEED'

ShelterBox has been using LuminAID lights in emergency situations around the world since 2012.
ShelterBox has included solar lighting in its aid packages before, but with space, weight and durability as key criteria luminAID has now become its product of choice. 50 luminAID packages can fit into the same space that eight torches would occupy.

Our ShelterBox CEO said, ‘ShelterBox continually scans the market for products that will help families overwhelmed by disaster. luminAID is a very clever product, and we are pleased to have been among its earliest backers. I’m not at all surprised that Anna and Andrea won support on American Dragon’s Den, and we’ll be watching these young inventors to see what they come up with next.’
