Next Club meeting:
Sunday 19th February
February BOTY:
(Fixed) 1.6 English Bitter

Hi <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>,

Presidents Report

Dear Members,

There is a bit happening this month.

First up , massive thanks to Neil for organizing and going, Grant "Rocky" Morley for helping brew it, Clare for going (and mucking the grain) and helping,John Kingston, Michael Bowron, John Larges, Nixz Kerr, Chris Speck and Michael "Griff" Griffiths for showing up and helping. I didn't make it on the day but I did supply the recipe.

Fortunately, from Neil’s comments “I don’t like beetroot” we managed to brew a beer that Adrian from Moon Dog said he is going to make again, to put on the Bar... There will be a keg of this bad boy, on Sunday. It's Beetroot Baltic Porter! (Photos here)

This Sunday’s meeting sees the set recipe, please have your entries in by one. Entries after one, won't be accepted. We expect in excess of 14 entries. We will need judges. If you have never judged, here is your chance.

I for one am intrigued. Can every entrant bring along some info about how they brewed their beer, on what system, gravity, yeast behavior our and the like? We can have a wonderful discussion.

Whilst on the subject of competitions, don’t forget that there is a bit coming up. Merri Mashers IPA, Yarra Valley Belgian beer fest and not forgetting our own Stout Extravaganza. If your brewing a Russian Imperial or a Baltic, you may want to get it done now, put it in and see what happens, then see what happens, next year. It’s worked for me and I highly recommend this shambolic but structured brewing calendar!

A massive thanks to Grant Morley for buying, cooking and serving last month’s free club BBQ. For those that missed it, we had some new friends come along, who elected to join. Welcome to them. Never, in all my years at the club, has there been 20 people at a January meeting. There we 5 of us, one year!

Naval Association dues are now payable. The club will pay these for you. This forms part of your club membership cost. Not to mention the free feed at AGM and Christmas.

On a side note, it’s not going to be long before the AGM happens. Chris and Nixz, our newsletter editors will be stepping down. There may also be other positions that may be available.

Start thinking about what you can contribute to your club. See you all Sunday.

Don't forget, if you use it, please wash it....help clean the BBQ, vacuum the floor, and wipe down a table....

Thanks Cheers Ferg

Competitions Update

BOTY fixed recipe this Sunday  - All entries must be received before 1pm!

Newsletter Editor and Website Content Maintenance - Position Vacant

Hello all.
Your current newsletter editors and website content members - Nixz & Chris have been in this role for two years now and it is time for the Stein to be passed on.

We have other priorities and we have made our mark so it is someone else's turn now....

This position will be made vacant at the June AGM when the committee is dissolved... so it would be great to have a member or two step up and take on this important function of our club on.

Full support and training will be given (and ongoing support as required) to the awesome Westgate Brew Club member who steps up to the Beer Newsletter Plate...

Melbourne Brewers Beerfest 2017

Entries close: Closed
Event Date: 24 & 25th February 2017

Beerfest 2017 is moving and it’s going to be a very exciting event for our club. We are still in Kyneton, but will relocate to PGL Campaspe Downs adventure camp, little more than 5 minutes outside the town. Campaspe Downs is self-contained venue and has some great facilities for staging Beerfest 2017. Check it out here

Merri Mashers IPA Comp 2017

Entries close: 11th March
Event Date: 19th March 2017

(Note - Most entries for this competition can be entered in to the Westage Brewers May BOTY comp)

This year, judging will take place at The Terminus Hotel, North Fitzroy on Sunday, 19th of March.

In addition to the six Specialty IPA styles covered by Section 21B of the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines (Black IPA, White IPA, Red IPA, Rye IPA, Belgian IPA and Brown IPA), the competition is now open to entries in the more traditional categories: 21A American IPA, 22A Double IPA and 12C English IPA.

What’s more, experimental brewers are encouraged to enter in the special category, “Specialty IPA Not Otherwise Described in Section 21B”. In this category, the entrant must describe the type of Specialty IPA and its key characteristics in comment form so judges will know what to expect. This could include Brett IPA, New England (“Juicy” or “Milkshake”) IPA, fruit additions or other concoctions that can still be identified as an IPA:

Good Beer Week

Event Date: May 12th - 21st 2017

The club will be taking part in the Cryer Malt SMASH challenge again this year as part of good beer week. We will find out what our ingredients will be at the showcase gala on 17th March.

Anyone who is interested in going to the showcase gala should get tickets early. It's only $50 with 20 drink tokens and a food voucher.

This event is much better value than GABS and this year will be held in the atrium at Fed Square.

Link to the gala showcase tickets can be found here
