A University of Maryland (UMD) team, UMDLoop, won the Performance and Operations Award and placed in the top five for overall pod design at this weekend's SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition held in Hawthorne, Calif.
The UMD Hyperloop team includes mechanical engineering students Catherine Demmerle, Nico Gomez, Hae Lee Kim, Vineet Padia, Adith Thummalapalli, Alex Valdez and Cody Wright.
Demmerle, Gomex and Kim (pictured at left) are also members of Terps Racing, our Formula SAE student team. #GoTerps!
The Department of Energy spotlighted RoCo, our roving, cooling robot at this year's ARPA-E Technology Showcase. RoCo is being developed by the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering as part of ARPA-E's DELTA program.
"One of the world’s first personal air conditioning systems, this portable system uses a “smart” nozzle to track user’s movements and direct cool or warm air where needed. RoCo cuts down on the need for central AC or heat, keeping the occupants comfortable with much lower energy use. Listen to [their] podcast episode about the “future of cool” for more about RoCo and interviews with its creators."
Spotlight on NAVAIR-Funded Research at Maryland
A cooperative agreement between the University of Maryland (UMD) and the Naval Air Warfare Center – Aircraft Division (NAWC-AD) concerning the Research and Educational Development Program helps support a variety of research projects in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Alumna ToniAnn Thomas
(B.S. '82) and IBM colleagues visit a Clark School FLEXUS class this spring to discuss harvesting innovation and career opportunities for engineers at IBM. Thomas is a partner with IBM Global Business Services, Public Sector and Commercial Healthcare and serves on the Department of Mechanical Engineering's Visiting Committee.
Brewing Up Success: Terps on Tap
ME Alumnus Francis Smith (B.S. '14) featured in Terp Magazine for his successful start up of Diamondback Brewing in Baltimore.
Alumnus Michael Armani (B.S. '05 Mechanical Engineering, Ph.D. '11, Bioengineering) will be this spring's Whiting-Turner lecturer at the Clark School of Engineering. Armani is the CEO at M3D, a major innovation company in 3D printing. Armani attended the University from 2001–2011. During that time he was active in many technology innovation projects and startup businesses.

Calling All Terps!
What an exciting time to be a Maryland Mechanical Engineering Alumni! 2019 is right around the corner and it will mark 125 years of engineering innovation and excellence at the University of Maryland. To keep that momentum going for the next 125 years, we're calling all MechE Terps to stay connected with the department and support the next generations of engineers through some of these opportunities.
Play a Round of Golf, Support ME Scholarships
This event is being organized by Pi Tau Sigma, the Mechanical Engineering Honors Society, and the department to help more students pursue an education in mechanical engineering. Your participation in this tournament as a player or a sponsor will directly provide for scholarships to engineering students in need. REGISTER TODAY!
Design Day celebrates the engineering creativity of our senior students, who engineer solutions to everyday problems as part of their Capstone Design class.
At right: Last year's spring 2016 Design Day People's Choice winning team Skimreaper. They developed an autonomous lake-skimming robot that helped improved water quality by managing harmful vegetation like algae and duckweed.
