President’s Letter

Historically, artists perfected their skills by copying the works of old masters. In fact, this still goes on today in many American and European museums.

When it comes to art, we are taught that copying is wrong.  We are told to be ourselves and to make our art a unique expression of our individuality, at least as long as we have a pencil in our hands. Self-expression is the ultimate goal, we learn, even when we are small.

Have you ever copied a painting by one of the Old Masters, or at least old, long-dead artists? I have copied several Degas pastel paintings.  I didn’t use pastels but used a drybrush oil technique.  Not only was it fun, it was educational. When you try to copy something, you can’t help learn about what you’re replicating. I understand more about Degas and his use of light and sense of color and proportion—than I had ever learned by simply staring at his paintings.

When I was little kid, I didn’t learn much from all those teachers urging me to express myself—frankly, I don’t think I, or most people for that matter, have much too express, certainly not when they’re six.I learned to draw and paint on my own bycoping ads with pictures of cats and dogs in my mother’s magazines.  Along the way, I got an education in shading, depth, perspective, and all the other basics of drawing.

Of course, there are situations in which copying is most wrong. You don’t copy something and pass it off as your own. You shouldn’t copy something and then pretend it’s the original. That’s forgery. So it’s ok to copy as long as you follow the legal rules.

Remember to:
Learn, Laugh and become Inspired.

                                                                        Happy Painting!

MARCH WORKSHOP

“Painting Boldly from Life!”
with Carla Johannesmeyer

   March 18th, 2017
9:30-3:30 at Stallsville United Methodist Church.
We will set up at 9:00.

   Focuses:  Painting in Oils
Capturing the moment in Impressionist Layers of Color

This workshop will address the iterative process of developing a painting from observation.
   Areas of focus will include:
  • Composition – developing your point of view
  • Understanding Value–laying in your darks to lights
  • Developing color and temperature
  • Bringing out your highlights and shadows
  • Working the whole canvas. Be bold!
We will paint from life for this workshop.  For the first half of the workshop, we will paint a natural still life indoors.  I will have two still life arrangements set up.  One will be similar to the Cotton with Jar above and the other will have a floral/fruit theme. If time and weather permit, we will move outdoors to paint plein air for the second painting or you may choose to stay indoors.

A basic knowledge of drawing, painting, and color is helpful.   Carlaj.fineart@gmail.com

All Hands Needed As

Summerville ROCKS! The Arts:

Paint the town of Summerville; support a plein air artist; donate to the silent auction; help make our Guild the Talk of the Town!
The Guild’s Summerville ROCKS! Committee has been enlisting artists willing to paint en plein air on Friday & Saturday, March 10 & 11 (rain date, March 24-25).
On the Friday in March 10 (rain date, March 24), artists will check in from 8 AM to 9 AM at Art Central to have their canvas or paper stamped. At that time, artists can already have a sketch of their chosen subject done, but painting should be done in public.  Everyone should be set up by 10 AM, allowing them to paint as late as 4 PM.  Artists will be able to pass out flyers, business cards, and have photos of their work at their stations. They cannot, however, legally set up works to sell. They will be able to have additional paper or canvases stamped on Saturday morning.  The committee will need all Guild members to step up to help allow the artists to take breaks and eat lunch.
On the Saturday, we hope everyone will join us on the grounds of First Citizens Bank for the live auction of our artists’ works.  A silent auction of donated items will accompany the live auction. Tickets for the event will be $25 and will include an elegant champagne bar and hors d’oeuvres.
Some of last year’s S ROCKS! sponsors want to paint another rocker as a donation to the silent auction. We hope to have those sponsors identified by February 8.  We hope local business – and Guild Members – will donate to the silent auction, as well. Those items need to be collected by February 27, allowing time for the auction program to be finalized. Silent Auction items can be dropped off at Tuesday Paint from 9am-12pm at Stallsville United Methodist Church.
Please contact committee chairman Diana Barth at dianabarth09@gmail.com  or Committee member Renee Bruce at reneebruce47@yahoo.com if you have a silent auction donation, would like to paint en plein air, have a suggestion for event sponsors, or would like to volunteer to help during the event days.
The Committee meets Mondays at 5 PM at Art Central Art Gallery, when silent auction items will be collected.
Guild Members your donation could be a print, a painting, a coupon, a gift certificate for a painting, a lesson, demo... the possibilities are endless.

Donations need to be collected by February 27, to meet the program deadline.

Silent Auction items can be dropped off at Tuesday Paint from 9am-12pm at Stallsville United Methodist Church.
