Cleaning and prepping data is crucial to smooth, robust analyses. This workshop will teach participants how to use software tools to ensure data is ready for analysis. Register here!
Introduction to Regular Expressions
Large texts and datasets can be a hassle to search through and edit, but regular expressions are here to save the day! This workshop will show you how to define text patterns in complex ways to serve your research and data cleanup using regular expressions, with a focus on their use in Python or R. Register here!
Zotero: Beginning and Intermediate Steps
Diving in deep to a research project is often engaging and can shed light on interesting new facts, but keeping track of all those citations can be a nightmare! This workshop aims to take away that nightmare by teaching participants how to use Zotero, an open-source citation manager. Register here!
Introduction to Optical Character Recognition Software
Adobe Acrobat can't always help you search digitized documents with complex layouts or non-English text. This workshop will introduce participants to other softwares that provide optical character recognition and show how to use them. Register here.
Stata FUN!damentals
This three-part workshop series will get you started working with the statistical software Stata, providing you with the basic knowledge to import datasets, analyze them, and present results.  Register for Part 1 here!
NLP with NLTK in Python
Put your Python skills to good use by attending this workshop on Natural Language Processing (NLP) using the Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK). Participants will cover topics like name entity recognition and part of speech tagging. Register here!
Introduction to Data Visualization with Tableau
Creating informative and engaging data visualizations doesn't always require coding. Get an introduction to the widely-used platform Tableau in this workshop and start visualizing your data in interesting ways! Register here.
Introduction to Mapping with ArcGIS Online
Build a solid foundation for using ArcGIS Online (AGOL) by attending this D-Lab workshop that also explores finding data sources through AGOL. Register here!
Geospatial Data & Maps in R: Part 1
Expand your skills in R by attending this 2-part series on visualizing geospatial data using R. Part 1 will explore methods for importing and creating spatial data, defining coordinate systems, and more. Register here!
Data Organization in Stata
Avoid getting lost in your own data and ensure smooth sailing with your do files by attending this workshop on how to stay organized in Stata. Register here!

QMG Presents: A Qualitative Social!
D-Lab's Qualitative Methods Working Group (QMG) is hosting an informal networking social with qualitative scholars, so come stop by for refreshments and conversation. Register here!
GeoMatters
D-Lab and the Library are launching a brand new working group focused on geospatial data! All skill levels are welcome and the first group meeting will be held March 1 at D-Lab. Find out more about this new working group here!
Get Involved in Spring 2017
Working groups are a great way to get involved in a community of like-minded researchers. You can always join at any time! See a listing of working groups on our website.
Special Events & Announcements
Calling all Qualtrics and Tableau users!
D-Lab is looking for UCB students who have strong knowledge of Qualtrics or Tabealu to lead workshops. See this blog post for more details.
Using Network Analysis for Ancient Archival Reconstruction
On Wednesday, Feb 22 from 5:00-7:00 PM in Barrows 356, the Digital Humanities Fellow lectures at D-Lab will begin! Adam Anderson will present his most recent findings from a corpus of cuneiform archives and the remains of an international Bronze Age merchant colony. His work illustrates how network analysis is useful for archival reconstruction, even under the worst conditions, when the documents within the archives come from unprovenanced and looted contexts.
Spring 2017 Tours & Orientations
D-Lab is here to support and advance research in the social sciences, humanities and related disciplines. If you are a faculty, student, or advisor the D-Lab team is available in the Spring Semester to come to your department and give an orientation of our services. We are also happy to host your group at the D-Lab for a formal or informal tour of our space and to discuss our services. Email us to arrange a visit.
