New Agency to Monitor Chinese Internet
News from China’s internet regulations authorities suggests Beijing is seeking to increase control over the country’s internet. A new commission will be responsible for investigations into internet related services and hardware providers.
New regulations, released under the framework of China’s cyber security law put in place November 2016, envision establishment of a new official agency to managing internet security policies nationwide. The Agency will be tasked with preventing Chinese government agencies and officials from purchasing “unapproved” online products and services.
The proposal on regulations is open for public comment until March 04, 2017. The 2016 Cyber Security Law was widely criticized by foreign IT businesses. The proposal on the new agency suggests initial concerns may be validated, as Beijing appears to be setting up great ability to shut foreign companies out of wide sections of the Chinese internet market.
