Pilot Program Presents Major Change For China Intellectual Property
The China Intellectual Rights Infringement Complaint Center, located in Beijing, reports that a new pilot program has been launched in Shanghai which would overall Intellectual Property rights protection in China.
In the past in China, trademark rights are approved and monitored under the authority of the State Administration of Industry and Commerce, while patents are regulated by The State Intellectual Property Office. The new program in Shanghai places both Trademarks and Patents, in addition to Copyrights under a new Intellectual Property Bureau.
The new program is aimed at simplifying and coordinating intellectual property protection across the three areas of intellectual property. It time it is expected that this program will be expanded nationwide.
As Chinese companies move up the value chain, and begin to try to build their own global brands, it is clear that the government is placing higher priority on intellectual property protection, and reducing the impact of Trademark squatters.
At the Beijing Intellectual Property court, founded in November 2015, 7,500 cases were heard in 2015. About 73% of these were regarding Trademark rights.
