From the desk of Mr Nick Clogg: College Academic Head The first term has started off at a frenetic pace which does not appear to subside – it is hard to believe that half-term is already upon us. Yet amidst this frenetic pace, there is always one thing I look forward to: the interviewing process for all the Grade 7s wanting to enrol at St David’s in 2018. It is a privilege listening to these young men from all our feeder schools; they have an innocent manner in which they express their opinions on a variety of different questions, and still, virtually always their intuition never ceases to amaze me. During this process, I am always ‘forced’ into reminding myself of the wonders of this institution: it is an opportunity for us to reflect, through the eyes of the potential Grade 8s of 2018, on where we are as an educational institution. In most cases we remain an institution of choice because first and foremost, our Marist values resonate with many of the interviewees and their families. This coupled with our own powerful sense of family and the numerous opportunities available to all who wish to take advantage of these, create a significant attraction towards the College. Too often, however, we, as custodians of St David’s, fall into the trap of focusing on our flaws and missing all that is so good. I wish I could record some of the interviews I have experienced thus far just to showcase how ‘good’ we are seen to be through the eyes of the boys being interviewed, and how desperate they are to become part of our community. On occasion, maybe we do become blind to all the ‘good’ that surrounds us daily, and we tend to ‘forget’ how lucky we all are to share in the many wonderful experiences on offer at St David’s?
The swimming tour to KZN took place from the 9th to 12th February. The A and B team participated in the Westville Boys' High School Gala and the St Henry's Marist College Gala respectively.
The tour was a success highlighted by the B team's victory at the St Henry's gala and the A team achieving a third place overall at the Westville Boys' High gala.
The St Henry's gala is a special event as it brings Marist schools together. The Westville Boys' High gala is attended by most of the country's top swimming schools and makes for a very competitive and exciting event. Many of our swimmers swam excellent times and improved on their personal bests which contributed to a superb performance from the team.
Tours are a wonderful opportunity for the boys to partake in different activities. This came in the form of a fun Life Saving introduction course on Addington Beach. It was fantastic to see the boys learn new skills and have a lot of fun while doing it.
I would like to thank the parents for their support of this tour as well as all staff (Mrs Greensill, Mr Gilardi, Mr Biller and Mr Kennedy) involved for their hard work and dedication in making this tour a success.
Inter-House Basketballby Elvis Ukpong
It was very interesting for the coaches to sit back and watch the 2017 Inter-House Basketball competition as the boys organised themselves into junior and senior teams and competed. The basketball skill level has improved and the talent pool seems to be evenly distributed across the various houses as was evident in the number of keenly contested and close matches.
Combining the results of both the Junior and senior teams, the final standings were as follows:
Osmond: 8
The Bishops: 7
College: 6
Benedict: 3
Congratulations to Osmond for winning the 2017 Inter-House Basketball Competition.
“Having been at this school for 3 years, I have never experienced such a competitive inter house competition. Even leading up to this event, the boys were filled with excitement, arguing about which house has the strongest team.
This event allowed me to bond with the younger boys in our house, who performed with great grit and courage. They won all their games although being the underdogs of this competition.
I am honoured not only to participate in this competition, but to be given the opportunity to coach the Osmond cubs to their victory. Having come from a house which has never won this event and is always labelled as the underdogs, I feel immense pride having defied the odds and lifted the title.
This shows that the future of St David’s basketball is in good hands.”

“I really enjoyed the inter-house event because there was such an amazing vibe and playing alongside the grade 9 boys was a lot of fun because every boy there tried their best and gave their all for their house. It was the best inter-house event I have ever participated in.”

The Prep school were fortunate enough this last week to participate in the Oakhill Waterfront Chukka Festival (09-12 February 2017.). Our under 12 water polo team represented the school, a squad of 11 boys competed against the likes of Reddam, Grey (PE) and Stirling. For our U12s to take on many other first teams was a huge achievement in itself, playing 9 games, the boys managed to win 5, draw 1 and lose 3. They showed great humility and learnt many lessons from the festival. This was their first tour, one of many to come for our young gentlemen. They made many new friends, especially with the girls' schools and had the privilege of playing water polo in the Knysna Waterfront Harbour. This is just the start of their exciting water polo adventures as the world is their “oyster” at the moment.

CANEOING GCU SCHOOLS LEAGUE
It was a GCU Schools' league race which included both disciplines: sprints and long distance. This was the second race of the season and it took place in Germiston at the VLCC. The St David’s boys paddled phenomenally well achieving 5 podium placings.
These boys include:
1 – Thomas Wilmot – 2 silver medals, one for each discipline. (U8)
2 – Rupert Schonburn – 1 Bronze medal for long distance. (U8)
3- Matthew Wilson – 1 Bronze medal for long distance. (U10)
4 – Theo Dreyer – 2 Silver medals, one for each discipline. (U12)
5 – Nicholas Erwee – 2 Bronze medals, one for each discipline. (U12)
We have an upcoming race which will be at our home club DABS; all our paddlers are looking forward to this next step in the league.
A massive thank you to all staff involved in these sporting events, as well as to all parents who assisted and made them a reality. A specific mention to Mrs Dreyer in the canoeing space for her tireless work and to Mr Bregman for his hospitality and assistance with the Knysna tour.

We offer lessons in the following instruments: piano, guitar, drums, saxophone, trumpet and voice. Currently we have seven teachers, who are here on certain afternoons on a contract basis.
The cost for these lessons this year is R195 per 30-minute lesson.
Many parents contacted us towards the end of last year. These boys’ names are on our waiting list. Our instrument teachers are in the process of organising lessons with their current students. Once they have completed this process, they will be able to look at new students. We thank you for your patience.
If you have any queries, please email Mrs Susanne Human (humans@stdavids.co.za) or Mr Chris Luke (lukec@stdavids.co.za).
