On January 20th, Professor Yves Daudet officially retired as Secretary-General of The Hague Academy of International Law. A special farewell ceremony and reception were held in his honor during which the new Secretary- General, Professor Jean- Marc Thouvenin was formally introduced to the Academy's community members. A few days before he left office, Professor Daudet graciously agreed to be interviewed by the editors of the Newsletter. Surprisingly, he did not held back! Find out more how he looks back on his time at the Academy, his many highlights and accomplishments and how he will continue to stay involved in the future of the Academy.

Last month, The Peace Palace Library donated a copy of Mare Liberum to the Anton de Kom University in Suriname. The book was donated on the first day that the Anton de Kom University opened its new law faculty. The Dean, Mr Clayton Wallerlei (LL.M) and the Vice-Dean Ms. Wanda Pherai (LL.M) were delighted to accept this important legal publication. Even though the new law faculty does not offer a LL.M program on Public International Law yet, more and more students express a strong interest in this field. Mr. Wallerlei and Ms. Pherai explained that they started working together with the Open University in The Hague to assist students who are incorporating international law topics into their Master’s thesis.

As of January 1st, the new Secretary-General of the The Hague Academy took office. Professor Jean-Marc Thouvenin, Professor at Paris-Nanterre University, has been appointed by the Academy’s Curatorium to succeed Professor Yves Daudet who occupied this position from 2005 to 2017. A farewell ceremony for Professor Daudet and to welcome Professor Thouvenin has taken place in the Academy’s Auditorium on Friday 20 January 2017.

The legal fields that are included in our subscription are: French civil law, criminal law, administrative law, business law, labor law, real estate as well as European - and International Law. The Encyclopédie Juridique Dalloz contains twelve Répertoires.The encyclopedias are frequently used by practitioners and scholars. They are of a high scholarly quality in that all the articles have been written by renowned judges, scholars, or practitioners.

On the occasion of International Women's Day, the Academy is pleased to invite you to a Symposium including a book launch of the latest Academy publication "Women's Human Rights and the Elimination of Discrimination". This book, published in January 2017, will be presented by its editors: Professor Maarit Jänterä-Jareborg (University of Uppsala, Sweden) and Professor Hélène Tigroudja (University of Aix-Marseille, France) on the 8 of March between 17:00 and 19:00 hours in the Auditorium of the Academy. Other guest speakers will be confirmed at a later date. The Symposium will be closed with a reception.

At the turn of the century the role of Law Libraries and legal librarians had not changed fundamentally since their inception. Facing formidable challenges ever since, mostly by technology, their role has changed considerably. Law Libraries can be seen as the provider and gatekeepers of legal information. Correspondingly, a Law Library is also dependent on the institution that it is embedded within. In that sense, there is a mutually beneficial relationship. There are many different types of Law Libraries, think of Law Libraries servicing government institutions like courts and legislatures, or Law Libraries in the private sector assisting law firms and academic Law Libraries that aid students and scholars.

On January 27th, 2017, American President Donald Trump signed ‘Executive Order 13769’ titled Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorists Entry into the United States’. The purpose of this order is to place a limit on the number of refugees to be admitted into the United States in 2017. The order suspends the entry of foreign nationals from seven Muslim majority nations namely, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for a period of 90 days after which an updated list will be put in place. The order also indefinitely suspends nationals from Syria. This blog will briefly highlight the international legal implications.

Antarctica is Earth's fifth-largest and southernmost continent. Although it has no human population of its own, seven sovereign states have claimed sectors of land in Antarctica. In 1959 the Antarctic Treaty was signed in Washington to establish Antarctica as a region of peace and cooperation, and to deal with issues relating to claims of sovereignty. Its primary purpose is to ensure “in the interests of all mankind that Antarctica shall continue forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become the scene or object of international discord”.
